Fat Tea Macanese Food @ Damansara Perdana, P.J

Fat Tea, most probably the only Macanese food restaurant in Malaysia (?) that I know.

Nestled in commercial area of Emerald Plaza North at Damansara Perdana, Fat Tea Macanese Food’s vibrant mélange reflects the rich heritage behind Macanese cuisine, blending Cantonese roots with a Portuguese legacy, with diverse influences that can be traced to the ports of Africa and Southeast Asia.

The restaurant has a rather pleasant setting with hanging light bulbs and LED spotlights illuminate the space. Some unique ornaments are placed every nook and cranny at the restaurant, but I had no chance to snap more photos of the interior because the restaurant was almost fully occupied that time.

I found the menu fairly “interesting” as majority of the dishes sound new to me. It comprised wraps, toasties (eg: Macao Style Pork Chop Bun & Egg Char-Siu Sandwich), salad, mains such as Piri Piri Chicken Chop, Portuguese Chicken, Macanese Meat Loaf, Belacan Pork, Beef Stew,Fried Lacassa as well as assorted desserts and pastries.

Macao Style Pork Chop Bun (RM19.00)

Sandwiched between a nice crusty bun, the pan fried pork chop was a bit dry to me.

Sampler platter (RM78.00 – for 2-3pax)

If you’re indecisive on what food to opt for, this platter is a good solution because it allows you to choose 3 mains (out of 6 options), so that you can try more dishes. The platter served with rice, bread roll and salad.

Portuguese Chicken

Despite the ‘Portuguese’ reference in its title, this dish originated in Macau. The appearance of this Po Kok Khai (Cantonese) is very similar with Japanese curry – thick and creamy. But actually, the dish was chicken pieces, potato chunks and pork Chorizo baked in rich and creamy coconut milk and turmeric concoction. It has a mild curry taste and a lovely coconut scent. It’s certainly pure heaven in your mouth when you eat this with hot rice.

Capela (Macanese Meat Loaf)

Unlike the common meat loaf that we’re more accustomed to, this Macanese meat loaf gets its flavor and texture from olives, Edam cheese and almond, topped with crispy bacon. Texture wise, it was not as “packed” as I’ve expected, but the flavour was competent. Oh ya, I found chopped wood ear mushroom studded in the minced pork filling too.

Turmeric Pork

Pork shoulder and potatoes was first simmered in turmeric sauce the followed by roasted in the oven. The flavour was rather uninspired to me but the dish was interestingly served with pork crackling.

Other options for mains are Minchi, Piri Piri Chicken and Belacan Pork.

Minchi (RM42.00)

It’s national dish of Macao of minced pork (sometimes beef is used too) cooked with diced fried potatoes and onion, seasoned with Worcestershire sauce. Comfort food at its best, served with perfectly fried egg and rice. Fat Tea version came with surprise element of fried diced potatoes (akin French fries) sprinkles.

Served along with the Minchi were a small bowl of crunchy golden nuggets of fried pork lard (Zhu Yao Zha) as well as French Bean salad.

Baked Duck rice (RM32.00)

Probably the least favourite dish of that afternoon. The flavour of the duck rice was a tad odd for our liking, there was an overwhelming taste of spices/herbs.

Butterfly Gula Melaka Swiss Roll (RM10.90)

Rose Lychee Swiss Roll (RM10.90)

Portuguese Orange Cake (RM14.90)

Cakes was decent.

♥Verdict: Definitely a new culinary experience to me since this was my first time trying Macanese food. I can’t say I was bowled over by the food but for those who never try Macanese food, this place worth a try for some excitement to your taste bud.
