Uokatsu @ Sri Hartamas

I frowned upon entering Uokatsu.

There was a fishy odor wafting through the restaurant, I showed my dissatisfied face to hubby who brought us here but his response was like this ┐(´д`)┌ (helpless). >_<  Since we had no other plan, we proceed to get a table at the furthest end.

The minimalist space was nicely illuminated by the sunlight from the huge windows. Tables were placed sparingly with comfortable personal space. The restaurant was filled up in mere minutes while we were waiting for our food, although it was just 10 minutes after their opening.

The menu was compact with good variety of dishes. Uokatsu holds pride for its fresh produce directly imported from Japan, Norway, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia.

Dashimaki Tamago Set (RM34.00)

This thick slab of Tamagoyaki certainly can satisfy any egg lovers! It was aptly cooked with tender and fluffy texture.

Thick cut of fresh ocean trout.

Trout Chazukke (RM24.00)

Wanted to try the Uokatsu Don but it wasn’t available that day, so I settled with this Chazuke, which is a Japanese dish featuring cooked rice with Dashi (or hot green tea) poured over it, and served with various toppings.

The seasoned rice is shaped into a Onigiri then slightly pan fried to brown on both side with a layer of scorched rice (however I don’t fancy this because it tends to stick on my teeth =.=”). Topped with a small piece of pan fried Salmon (or trout?) fillet to provide an extra hit of protein to the meal.

Served in a dainty teapot, the hot dashi was mild savoury, other condiments included pickles, shredded dried seaweed, sesame and chopped spring onion. After pouring the Dashi, one will be rewarded with a bowl of light savoury yet clean flavour comfort food that Japanese eat it when they are sick, jetlagged, hungover or in need of some revival.

Mentai Rice (RM24.00)

The rice bowl was sumptuously crowned with tamago with seasoned roe and Japanese mayo. It was creamy, salty and full of umami flavour that sharing is NOT recommended!

Ocean Trout Sashimi (RM22.50)

Good portion, fresh, succulent with subtle sweetness, no complaint for the price charged.

Grilled Whole Japan Squid (RM40.00)

It was quite a decent-sized Surume Ika (Japan Squid), slightly coated with Teriyaki sauce, nicely grilled with pleasant smoky flavour and the texture was tenderly soft. The dipping sauce was made from squid stomach (according to the staff), had a rather pungent and fishy taste that I’m not fond of (but hubby and Sam okay with it).  (^_^;)

Verdict: The menu seem quite extensive but to be honest, I spent quite some time to decide what to eat. Revisit? Perhaps for the fresh Sashimi only.

  • Fishy odor and a consideration to only ordering fresh sashimi on next visit does not sound encouraging >.<

  • If there’s a fishy odour emitting from the restaurant, one would think that their seafood is not fresh but your experience was otherwise, so I’m wondering what contributed to the fishy odour. I once walked into a shop specialising in prawn noodles and also wasn’t liking what I smelled in the air but I also ended up not liking the food (unlike you).

  • Kris, the Salmon Sashimi that we had was fresh so I assumed the freshness of the fish wasn’t the source of the fishy odour that I encountered. There must be some other reason that cause that smell. ◔_◔
