Bartolo Lisboa Bakehouse @ Central Market, K.L

This was by far the most carbo-loaded breakfasts that we’ve ever had! Even a “breakfast monster” like me almost wanted to hoist the white flag halfway through the meal. >_< But, don’t misunderstand that the food wasn’t good, it just because we under estimated their food portion. LOL

Introduced by a friend of mine (who is a bread lover) quite some time ago, and finally we made our makan cum jalan jalan trip downtown by MRT. The first stop was Bartolo Lisboa Bakehouse at Central Market Annexe, to settle our breakfast.

To take the advantage of its space at mezzanine floor, the al-freso dining area is furnished with patio chairs, high chairs and potted plants, which exudes a laid back summer holiday vibe.

The semi indoor section is equally atmospheric as well. It has a rustic and cozy ambience, filled with lots of natural light. Raw brick walls with contrasting tones of yellow and green, cement flooring, mix and match furniture, mingling with the distinctive Azulejo tiles that sparingly adorn the whole space, creating an comfy sanctuary from the hustle and bustle.

Assorted Portuguese breads and pastries on display.

Other merchandises include hand-painted tiles and home decor accessories.

The flavours of Portugal that brought by Bartolo Lisboa Bakehouse do not just limited at  the aforementioned pastries. The menu covers good selection of savoury bites, sandwiches and authentic Portuguese dishes which we took some time to peruse and decided our orders.

The drinks menu has the usual coffees, fruit juices, smoothies, Kombucha, beers and cocktails. Sangria and good variety of Portuguese wines and Ports also available for your boozy session.

Focaccia with Dips (RM18.00)

Oh La La, I love all those dips! They are Romesco sauce, Pesto, herbed butter, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and sea salt. Bartolo Lisboa Bakehouse takes pride in making their dips, sauces, spreads and jam from scratch, and they are impressive, to say the least.

The Romesco is made from roasted capsicum and tomatoes, the gratifying tangy and smoky flavour of the dip goes really well with the bread and I guess it can be perfectly paired with any chips (think tortilla chip), toasts and even raw veggies (cucumber, carrot)!

Those 3 types of Focaccia were soft and subtly flavoured with extra ingredients of onions and cherry tomatoes. Good to be eaten on its own or with the dips.

The combination is simple but sumptuous.

The Bean & Mushroom Breakkie (RM26.00)

Sam’s choice from the All Day Brunch category was a platter comprised sunny side up topped with Fava Beans/broad beans, stir fried mixed mushrooms and Bola d’Água – a type of Portuguese water bread with crusty exterior and fluffy interior.

The broad beans was rather bland but the stir fried mixed mushrooms was good, it was pleasantly earthy and savoury.

The Sausage Breakkie (RM30.00)

Also from the All Day Brunch list, hubby opted for this Alheira smoked sausage topped with Pesto, sunny side up, super crispy skinny matchstick fries, and Papo Seco bread.

The texture of the Alheira, a type of Portuguese sausage made with minced poultry and bread although wasn’t as firm as pork sausage, but the flavour was delish. The Papo Seco bread had a super light texture and delicate crust.

Add on RM18.00 for drink and a side. I opted the Garlic Spinach Mash for additional healthy component for our meal was a wrong decision because the dish tasted just as unattractive as it looked. (´Д`。)

Pastel de Nata (RM6.00)

Portuguese Egg Tart from the authentic Portuguese recipe! It may look same with those we usually have here but there’s slight different on the taste. The crust was pleasantly flaky with the rich creamy egg custard filling, with hint of cinnamon.

Verdict: I can understand why my friend has been revisiting this place. Those Portuguese breads indeed worthy to let me make some sacrifices for my low-carb diet.                               。・°°・(>▽<)・°°・。
