Hakka Moi Zai @ Taman Sri Sinar, Kepong (Updated – Closed Down)

Located just a few doors away from Pokemon Noodle House, and in the same commercial area as Restoran Stay Fresh, Hakka Moi Zai is another eatery that we pass by every Saturday when we send Sam for tuition.

Brick wall, yellowish pendant lamps and drapery plants, the setting of the restaurant is cozy and homey. There are tables and chairs on the corridor as well for customers who want to dine alfresco.

As its name implies, Hakka Moi Zai’s menu is filled with variety of Hakka dishes, includes the essential Hakka Lei Cha (Thunder Tea Rice), Braised Pork Belly with Wood Ear Fungus, Abacus Stir Fry, Pork Knuckle Vinegar, Mui Choy Pork Belly, Yellow Wine Chicken and Hakka Egg Dumpling. Other choices such as toasts, half boiled egg, pork noodles, Nasi Lemak, pork/chicken chop (or with rice) and chicken soup rice also available.

Blue Pea Passion Fruit (RM6.50)

Thunder Tea Rice (RM14.90)

The Lei Cha is made up of seven different colourful condiments filled in deep spoon, served with blue tinted rice and crunchy crackers. There were peanuts, preserved radish (Choy Poh), long beans, black-eyed peas, dried bean curd, Sayur Manis, Choy Sum (?), as well as the Lei Cha broth was served in a teapot. With such an aesthetic presentation, I imparted a high expectation on the taste, however I was slapped with disappointment. The chef must be heavy handed when comes to salt, the key element of Lei Cha tea broth was really salty, too salty that I had to stop drinking it after a couple of sips.

Soup Pork Noodles (RM11.90)

Pork Noodles was just run of the mill.

Fried Pork Chop (RM15.90)

There are several sauce options to go with the pork chop such as passion fruit buttermilk, black pepper sauce, salted egg buttermilk and Thai sauce, but hubby opted the Moi Zai style (stated as green pea sauce in Mandarin) which he thought is their signature homemade sauce as its name suggested.

We were caught off guard by the unappetizing appearance of the green pea sauce and the taste also fall short. It was a little subdued and monochromatic.

Verdict: My craving for Lei Cha was fell short of satisfaction and I think I should have visited the Hor Poh Cuisine with Bib Gourmand title which is located just opposite Hakka Moi Zai. (¬_¬)

  • Ouch…slapped with disappointment….must be ‘painful’….kekeke! 😀 If there’s one thing I don’t eat, it’s lei cha, never learned to appreciate it. Sam’s pork noodles look different too…looks more like pan mee! :O
