Kong Xiang Canteen @ Laman Rimbunan, Kepong
Since the commence of MRT Putrajaya Line’s, there are more and more eateries emerge within Laman Rimbunan’s (Station Kepong Baru) host of culinary rendering the horrendous traffic condition in this area, especially the double parking problem. But, we still like to come here for dining, considering the wide selection of (new) restaurants, include the latest outlet of the popular Shin Zushi.
Among the many restaurants here, we opted to have our Sunday dinner at Kong Xiang Canteen, which offers Taiwanese and Japanese food. The interior of the restaurant is rather simple, sparingly decorated with Japanese inspired red lanterns, Noren and decorative wooden plaques.
Grilled Pork Neck is Kong Xiang Canteen’s signature dish which can be served with rice or Ramen, and even croissant. The large menu also covers sizzling Yakisoba with different mains (Unagi, grilled Salmon, grilled pork patty), a list of snacks, grilled items (pork neck, Abura Age, Unagi), assorted bento rice, Ramen, kids meals, tea time special (FOC a cup of tea/coffee for every dessert order, 3-6pm daily), jumbo bowl rice, dessert (croffle and Mochi) and beverages.
Miso Ramen with Grilled Pork Neck (RM21.90)
The portion of the Ramen although not as big as those served in Ramen restaurant, but it is sufficient for a filling meal. The broth was rich with delightful umami taste, savoury without being too salty.
The grilled pork neck was fairly thin with mild smoky flavour.
Jumbo Mixed Meat Rice (RM49.90)
Hubby and I decided to share a portion of Jumbo Mixed Meat Rice which is in the Jumbo Bowl series. Other choices include Jumbo Unagi Rice (RM36.90), Jumbo Grilled Salmon Rice (RM36.90), Jumbo Grilled Patty Rice (RM29.90), Jumbo Grilled Cheese Patty Rice (RM39.90), Jumbo Grilled Iberico Pork Neck Rice (RM45.90), Jumbo Fried Patty Rice (RM29.90) and Jumbo Fried Cheese Patty Rice (RM39.90).
It’s a fully loaded bowl of rice with it’s signature grilled pork neck, breaded fried fish fillet, breaded fried chicken chop, Ajitama and broccoli. The deep fried items were nothing out of ordinary. The flavour of the grilled pork neck was pretty good however it lost a bit of that tenderness, perhaps due to the thickness (too thin).
Verdict: Our dining experience at Kong Xiang Canteen was less exciting, I would say. Food was just merely decent, so don’t put high expectations if you plan to dine in here.

First time I see seaweed in a bowl of ramen not standing upright….and the ajitama eggs in both dishes seem to be almost hard-boiled…lol. For some reason, there are no proper Japanese restaurants (at least none that I’m aware of) in my neighbourhood other than sushi joints (and a BBQ one). I don’t even mind if it’s just decent (and reasonably priced) so that it can be somewhere we can it regularly for convenience.
Kris, I’m lucky that the eateries in my neighbourhood areas offer a diversity of cuisines.
