Papasan Canteen @ Jalan Kuchai Lama

This rather wholesome eatery is located at a place that I will hardly ever venture on my own but thanks to my “CNY small side income project”, here am I.

Papasan Canteen located in Kuchai Lama Business Centre on Jalan Kuchai Lama has been gaining popularity for years with its affordable and good portion food, especially its curry omelette rice with fried chicken which has so much raves on social medias.

Occupied two shoplots, the dining area was spacious and the seating are very well arranged with ample of room in between. The restaurant was brimming with character showcasing the owner’s collection of toys, decorative items and framed calligraphy. Service was attentive as there were many service crews. Please be informed that the restaurant only seat completed parties and only walk-in is served (no reservation). Getting parking at this area can be slightly challenging. (-“-;)

Papasan Canteen offers Japanese fusion food which included assorted rice bowls (Don), priced from RM18 – RM28, noodles (pastas & udon), priced from RM16 – RM28, appetizers and ala carte dishes, priced from RM6 – RM30, salads, priced from RM16 – RM27, Sushi, Maki & Sashimi, priced from RM20 – RM30. There are not many choices in the beverage menu though, herbal drinks, Kombucha, sparkling mojito, coffee, teas and a few of their housemade special drinks.

Calamari (RM17.00)

Deep fried squid were perfectly executed with crunchy and flavourful batter. The addition sprinkles of cheese powder is a magical boozy touch that amped up the flavour.

Omu Curry Rice 3P (RM19.00)

This is the aforementioned it’s signature curry omelette rice with fried chicken. Although I was expecting the generous portion (from photos that I’ve seen online) but still, I was caught-off-guard when my order was place on our table. The 3 huge pieces of fried chicken thigh sit egoistically on bed of Omu rice, topped with pickles and pool of Japanese curry.

The fried chicken was done to perfection, crispy skin, succulent, juicy and flavourful meat. The omelette was tender and the pickles brilliantly offset the meatiness and richness of the dish. The Japanese curry was just rather mediocre though. The portion really KO-ed me and for the first time I couldn’t finish my food. (^_^;)

Unagi Egg on Rice (RM24.00)

For the price charged, it was well justified with the portion served as the Unagi given was rather sizeable. Other ingredients such as stir fried mushrooms, scrambled egg and even the shredded seaweed were in generous portion. Flavour wise, nothing can go wrong with Teriyaki sauce, right? ^ω^

Teriyaki Beef Don (RM26.00)

It’s another fully loaded rice bowl that’s great value for money indeed. The rice bowl was topped copiously with adequately tender sliced beef, broccoli  and Tamago wedges, served with Teriyaki sauce. The sprinkles of fried garlic chips added a pleasant crunch element to the dish.

Verdict: All thing considered, we enjoyed our lunch at Papasan Canteen. Affordable price range, delicious food with good portion, definitely something I look forward to have it again if I’m in the territory.
