Pumbaa’s Nasi Lemak & Nasi Kandar @ Damansara Jaya
Pumbaa had drew attention on social medias a couple of months ago due to its controversial version of Nasi Kandar – Malaysia’s first Pork Nasi Kandar! But I’m not going to elaborate much about the news in this, but concentrate to the food that Mr. Suresh Gnanasekaran, the owner offers. (For those who are interested can read HERE)
Housed in Good Old Days Restaurant at Damansara Jaya, Pumbaa was the busiest stall at this Kopitiam. Air-conditioned with yellowish lighting, the restaurant was full house during our visit on Sunday morning.
The viral news unquestionably the best marketing tactic for your business, look at the long queue.
Non-halal sign is clearly visible at his stall.
Their Nasi Kandar and Nasi Lemak dishes include options like chicken, mutton, fish, squid and the notably pork, prepared in either Varuval, Rendang or Sambal sauce.
Nasi Lemak Babi (RM16.00)
The Nasi Lemak with missing egg and cucumber (・´ω`・), hubby who made the order didn’t aware of it until I told him. I found that both condiments weren’t in sight on the food counter when I checked back the photos, I guessed they were sold out but it was only 10.00am when we were there. (;¬_¬)
The Pork Varuval was tender and richly coated with gravy which was jam-packed with the complex flavor of herbs and spices. The meat was in small bite size and there was a mix of lean and fat meat. However, the rice was not as lemak as we would have hoped.
Verdict: The Pork Varuval was delicious but did not mind blowing, probably because this wasn’t my first time trying pork cooked in spices laden method (think Pork Rendang or Pork Curry).

I have been meaning to try this Pumbaa (since I go to DJ almost everyday) but the timing not so ngam for me. Maybe one day I will. I have been to Mr Suresh’s (now closed) restaurant at Taman Megah and the mutton varuval was very good. But later on, standards dropped maybe due to staff problems.
PH, I love mutton varuval (actually I like everything with mutton :P), it’s my default order when I have BLR, although I seldom have it. 🙂
Don’t know what the hooha is all about. We already have many hawkers selling pork nasi lemak. If we can’t use the word nasi kandar, soon they’ll ask us to stop using the word nasi lemak or pork rendang too (and there’ll be a long list). Different cultures/cuisines should be allowed to adapt the dish to suit their tastes what. So, if we make tom yum paella, can the Spanish say no? Idiots! Btw, I see you control your rice portion very well…lol! ^_~
Kris, all those are nonsense which the Cantonese said “Sek Bao Mou Yeh Zou” , means eat full nothing to do. Actually that was my hubby’s food and I skipped because I had sore throat that day.
