Tan Heng Noodle House @ Jalan Kepong

As a devotee of Hokkien Mee (both hubby and myself), we have been wanting to try one of the busiest Hokkien Mee restaurant at Kepong -> Tan Heng Noodle House, situated  along Jalan Kepong, next to the Hing Kee Bakuteh that I mentioned in this POST. What deter us from visiting this place? The above photo very much explain the reason. The Full house scene and sometimes with waiting queue is the common phenomenon here, especially on weekends. Finally on last month, we braved the hordes and paid a visit to Tan Heng to see what the fuss was about.

We were lucky that day to be able to secured the last empty table in the restaurant. (^^)v

Wide variety of noodles took center stage (Hokkien Mee, Wat Dan Hor, Loh Mee, Braised Yee Mee, Singapore Meehoon, Fried Rice Cake, Lala Meehoon, Fried Loh Shu Fun, etc) with price as low as RM10 per one pax portion to RM30 for 3 pax portion. There is a good selection of dishes to pair with rice in the menu as well, such as steamed fish head, Fried Onion Omelet, Stir Fried Yao Mak, Kam Heong Lala, Fried Fermented Bean Curd chickeng Wings, Penang Lobak, priced from RM6.50 to RM32.

Hokkien Mee (2 pax – RM19.00)

Thick strands of noodles were lusciously coated with glistening dark sauce, Tan Heng version of Hokkien Mee was slightly saucy.  There was a good portion of sliced pork, veggies, prawns and pork lard to boost up the aroma and taste. However, I found that the flavour was a little lack of oomph factor to appeal to me.

Fried Rice Cake (1 pax – RM11.00)

Since not many places offer this Fried Rice Cake (Beh Ge in Hokkien or also known as Nian Gao in Mandarin), I decided to get this and it certainly got off on the right foot with this order.

The fried rice cake was more saucier than the Hokkien Mee. The noodle dish was studded with sliced pork, veggies, prawns and very generous sprinkling of crunchy lard. The rice cakes were braised to a pleasant chewy texture. The addition of cilantro provided a distinctive refreshing herbs note which brilliantly cut through the savouriness of the soy sauce gravy. Even hubby who doesn’t like cilantro gave it a seal of approval.

Sliced Pork Soup (Small – RM10.00)

Also known as “Bak Gao Tong”, it’s a simple soup dish with vegetables and pork slices coated with tapioca starch coating. It is always my comfort food to be enjoyed for it’s wholeosomeness and perfectly fulfill my carbo-less diet.

Verdict: A teeny weeny disappointment for the Hokkien Mee since I imparted quite a high expectation to it. The Fried Rice Cake was sublime though and I would come back for it when the craving hits.
