Taste Legendary Nasi Lemak @ Pasar Transit, Chow Kit, KL

If there is one dish that Malaysians can never say no to, it would be Nasi Lemak. Its ubiquitous flavours are something that many hold close to their hearts and you can have it any time of day. From street stalls to kopitiam, swanky restaurants and Malaysian cafes, this is one item that is always on the menu.

Are you a fan of our National Dish? If yes, are you a worshipper of Malay style Nasi lemak or Chinese style Nasi Lemak? The Chinese style Nasi Lemak is less common compared to the Malay style Nasi lemak, which is widely available around the country. Both Nasi Lemak are made up of standard condiments like fragrant coconut milk rice, fried anchovies, peanuts, hard boiled egg, cucumber slices and Sambal (chili paste), with variety of curries and dishes to be added on for a more substantial meal. But of course, the big difference between both Nasi lemak is the Chinese ones offer non-halal dishes such as luncheon meat, wild boar curry, fried pork belly and even Chinese sausage (Lap Cheong).

What I’m going to share with you all today is a Chinese Nasi Lemak stall located in Pasar Transit (not inside the Pasar Chow Kit but a building next to it, behind the police station) which has been operating for more than 60 years.

We passed by a few old school Kopitiam and finally saw the Nasi Lemak stall is nestled almost at the end of the road. We were the second in the queue when we arrived there at about 8am but a longer queue was formed when we left.

The simple set up of the stall with spread of dishes and Nasi Lemak condiments on the table.

This is the main enticement and the first and foremost reason that attract us to come all the way to KL for Nasi Lemak – their signature Hakka Zha Yoke (Hakka Braised Pork Belly).

One of the quintessential dish of Chinese Nasi Lemak – wild boar curry.

Another main dishes were the above curry chicken and Sambal brown cuttlefish.

There’s no seats at the Nasi Lemak stall but you can bring your food to the Kopitiam two doors away for dine in.

Nasi Lemak with Sambal brown cuttlefish and Hakka Zha Yoke

It came with basic condiments of crunchy fried anchovies, halved hard boiled egg, sliced cucumber, stir fried Kangkung and Sambal. The Sambal was on sweet side which is quite customary for Chnese Nasi Lemak.

The braised pork belly was done to perfection with nearly melt-in-my-mouth fat layer and soft tender lean meat. I was give two piece of pork belly and some gravy to go with the fragrant and fluffy rice. Take a spoonful of that mixture of rice+Sambal+braised pork, it’s the ultimate comfort food one can ask for!

However, the Sambal brown cuttlefish did not impress me one tiny bit due to its thick and hard texture, which I assumed it wasn’t properly soaked.

Nasi Lemak with Wild Boar Curry

While the Hakka Zha Yoke is their sought-after dish but you mustn’t lose sight of the less talked about dish of this wild boar curry. It was just as good if not better. Soft meat pieces doused in thick and rich curry gravy which was sufficiently flavourful with a good notes of spices.

Total bill: RM20.50

♥Verdict: The Hakka Zha Yoke & wild boar curry Nasi Lemak definitely better than what I would have expected and I was largely contented with my meal here. Hubby and I already planned our next breakfast date at here again (Sam no longer wants to follow us, LOL)!

  • Yes, I’ve heard of this legendary nasi lemak for the longest time and would have visited if not for them to be located in an area we hardly, more like don’t, go to. :'( People rave about the char yoke here. The first time I had this hakka char yoke with nasi lemak when I was a teen going to Petaling Street with my mom. I thought it’d be a weird combo until I tasted it….it was so good! Sadly, that stall is no longer around today.

    • Kris, I think you should make a trip to this place & try out the Hakka Zha Yoke Nasi Lemak and maybe it can bring back the nostalgia feeling of your Petaling Street Zha Yoke NL.
