The Square @ Novotel Melaka
Food hunting is one of the main activity whenever I visit Melaka, however the sweltering tropical heat deterred us from going out from the hotel. Yes, we managed to try some local good food during our recent 3D2N trip (which I’ll be sharing it in another post), and we have chance to dine in at Novotel Melaka’s in-house restaurant as well.
The Square, Novotel’s signature all-day dining restaurant features buffet breakfast and dinner as well as hi-tea. There is also an extensive ala carte menu for local street food delights and international cuisine.

We were greeted by this modernly designed buffet station once we stepped into the restaurant. Beautifully accentuated with light panels similar with the glowing tree pillar at the lobby.

Walk into the second section of the restaurant lie a spacious dining area. Integrates colours and lively vibe in its ambience, I particularly adore the use of colours, the bright turquoise and red chairs heightening the vibrancy of the space to a whole new level.
Breakfast

The breakfast buffet spread was pretty standard ranging from eggs of assorted preparations, sausages, soup and fried noodles, porridge, salad, cheeses, cold cut, waffles, breads and pastries, fresh fruits, yoghurt, juices, coffee and tea.
Ala Carte Lunch

A basket of breads and bun was brought to us while waiting for our food to be served.

Chicken Pongteh (RM 22.00)

A classic Nyonya style chicken stewed cooked with fermented soy bean and Gula Melaka. It was decent with tender chicken meat paired with mushroom and potatoes. The gravy was creamy and savory which went really well with white rice however it was slightly under seasoned for my liking, I prefer it with stronger flavor.

Asam Ikan Pedas

My choice of Asam Ikan Pedas was excellent! Generous amount of battered fried fillet and vegetables drenched in spicy and sour. The broth had a great flavors that strikes a well balance of sourness and hotness that had me compulsively slurping up to the every last drop 😛 (Even the hubby stole a few spoons and exclaimed “Ho Chiak”!)

Nasi Lemak Ibunda (RM 22.00)
Gorgeously served on a long rectangular shape plate, Sam’s nasi lamak had her seal of approval from the extremely fragrant steamed coconut rice, spiced fried chicken, fried egg and condiments. The coconut rice definitely deserve an additional clap for its fluffiness and heavenly infused with aromatic coconut milk. Sam can’t take spicy food so I had some of the sambal with the rice and found it was mild in spiciness with hint of sweetness, pretty good stuff.
Other dishes worth check out is:-

Yong Chow Fried Rice (RM 18.00) which seem to be well prepared served with a huge prawn.

Nyonya Curry Laksa (RM 18.00), topped with quite plenty of ingredients such as prawn, chicken, egg, fish ball, fish cakes & bean curd puffs.

Sago Gula Melaka with Diced Mango (RM 8.00)
Buffet Dinner

The buffet dinner featured a decent spread of Nyonya delights as well as some western and and Chinese cuisines.

Oh Chien (oyster omelet) being freshly prepared at the live station.

The dessert corner was filled with assorted colourful Nyonya kuih, cakes, pies, puddings, mousses and completed with fresh cut fruits.

My choices of dessert to put a perfect ending to my dinner.

Wah berapa orang makan ni? Lol. Food looks yummy. Ya lo…very hot weather. Feel lazy to go out too
There were a few families dining together 😛
I’m salivating looking at the Nyonya food. I love chicken ponteh and asam fish too.
Haha, Nyonya food always associates with sourness and spiciness which can easily make one drooling ^__*
oooo, oh chien! i would go straight to that counter to ask for a plate! 😀
Yes, the cook station had the longest queue waiting for the yummy oh chien 😛
Their Asam Pedas is good but the chicken pongteh is a bit of a disappointment. I had their Mee Rebus too and that was good as well.
Agreed on the Asam Pedas & Ayam Pongteh but I didn’t try the mee rebus though 🙁
I’d like the fried rice that looks really colourful and well fried. I love sago gula melaka but haven’t had it with fresh mango before 🙂
It was a new combination for me too 🙂
