Yen Can Cook ~ Mongolian Beef (True Aussie Beef)
Mongolian Beef, despite its name, the dish has nothing to do with Mongolian cuisine. It is a Chinese-American (or American-Chinese) dish but there’s information mentions that it’s a dish from Taiwan. But anyway, Mongolian Beef is basically beef slices coated with a sweet savory brown sauce. It is a popular Chinese takeout and P.F. Chang’s version of this dish is probably the most well-known.
I was invited to join virtual lunch & webinar organized by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) recently. The guests were given some premium True Aussie beef/lamb to try out and here’s my simple recipe to prepare the yakiniku halal beef slices.
Ingredients (Serve: 2-3)
220g, beef slices/sliced flanked steak
1/2 thumb-sized ginger, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 spring onions, cut into 5cm lengths
Cooking oil
Sesame seed for garnishing (optional)
Sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2.5 tablespoons soy sauce
40ml water
Marinade
1.5 teaspoon cooking oil
1.5 teaspoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Cornstarch Slurry
1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 tablespoon water
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: Marinate the beef slices with the marinade for at least 30 minutes.
Step 2: Combine all the ingredients of sauce and mix until the sugar is dissolved. Give the sauce a taste, and adjust the amounts of sugar/soy sauce/water to your own taste.
step 3: Heat up a wok with cooking oil and stir-fry the marinated beef until they are half-done. Dish out and set aside.
Step 4: In the same wok, add some oil and stir-fry the garlic and ginger until aromatic. Add in sauce mixture (Step 2)
Step 5: Let the sauce simmer for about 2 minutes and slowly stir in the cornstarch slurry mixture. Cook until the sauce has thickened.
Step 6: Add the beef (Step 3) and scallions, toss everything together for another 30 seconds or the sauce is evenly coated on the beef.
Step 7: Garnish with sesame seeds and serve
I am sure this is delicious! Will try this recipe once I buy beef.
PH, hope you will like it!
Ah, I expected you to be among one of the recipients of this true Aussie beef (I got the invite too). Simple stir-fry meat like this is the best…I like to add sliced onions to mine beside spring onions though I usually do it with pork.
Kris, as usual you rejected the invite, >_< I've came across recipes which onion is added too. This dish goes really well with rice.
Wow!!! Your food presentation is very nice. I am so hungry looking at the photos with all the sesame seeds sprinkled. I can imagine how tasty it is.
TM, this dish is really nice! Try it out if you love beef too!
Memang cantik, nak!
