San Peng Prawn Mee VS Prawn Mee @ Piau Kee Kopitiam, Jln Loke Yew
Because of the her trustworthy reviews, I dare to challenge my hubby!
It’s a debate of good prawn mee in KL, which started off with hubby’s suggestion to have brunch at his go-to Prawn Mee place when he was working at Bangsar. I remember she highly recommended Prawn Mee at Red Leaf Kopitiam (renamed to Piau Kee Kopitiam), so I told hubby I wanted to try that instead. But, hubby insisted that I must try the one he suggested, which he raved how good it was and his Penang friends also gave a stamp of approval. Since both places are located in the same vicinity, why not just try both!

This is the San Peng Prawn Mee that got much praised from hubby and his friends. It’s a road side stall near Pudu LRT Station parking, a rather shabby setting if you ask me, with less than 10 tables. There were quite a lot of flies too. >_<. They offer Prawn Mee, Dry Prawn Mee, Lam Mee, Fish Balls Noodles and Kai Si Hor Fun (noodles with shredded chicken).
Prawn Mee (Small – RM9.50)
We had their signature Prawn Mee which came with topping of small prawns, poached chicken (instead of sliced lean pork), Kangkung, bean sprouts and fried shallots. From the appearance, it’s pretty persuasive with the broth had the significant layer of red oil, result of boiling prawn heads and shells. The broth conveying the sweetness and savouriness of the crustacean, satisfying and comforting but a tad mild for my palate. Portion wise, the poached chicken was quite generous in portion but I still prefer sliced lean pork as they tend to absorb the flavours of the soup more.
Verdict: Although the flavour of the broth was a teeny-weeny lack of oomph for me, it’s definitely a good bowl of Prawn Mee, I have no doubt about that.

This humble looking stall housed in Piau Kee Kopitiam (formerly Kedai Makanan Red Leaf) has been appeased Prawn Mee lovers with its dependable bowl of noodles for more than 5 years. The restaurant was rather vacant during my visit on last Sunday afternoon and I really worried that it no longer in operation. =.=”
Prawn Mee (Small – RM8.00)
Fried shallots lovers will be rejoiced over the amount of fried shallots sprinkles on this bowl of noodle. There was good amount of sizeable prawns and lean pork slices to complete the noodle. One sip and I was taken. The broth was robust in flavour, richly infused with essence of the prawn, especially the end note which I can distinctly tasted the sweetness of the prawn. It was everything you expected a good bowl of Prawn Noodle to be.
Oh ya, is hard boiled egg a default ingredient for Prawn Mee? Both I tried today were without hard boiled egg.
Verdict: This version had all the necessary ingredients and tasted the way it should. Which one I prefer or which one is my winner you may ask. Since I like strong flavour food, the later have slightly higher mark in my book. But like what I always say, taste is subjective, one person’s meat is another’s poison, some might find the one at Piau Kee Kopitiam too “salty” or “overwhelming”. I know there’re a few more good Prawn Noodles in Klang Valley, should I do the debate again? (^ω^)

LOL! I like this post. If based just on looks, the second one looks a lot more appealing. I guess you are in agreement with Kris as to which is the better one (for you). It is true, taste is subjective. Just like me and my partner, he does not like the Annie 1 curry mee. He prefers to one at a coffee shop in Damansara Kim which I found to be so so.
PH, since I like stronger flavour food, if I have to choose, Piau Kee would be.
What a nice thing to say…thank you very much for your vote of confidence. I see (like me) you prefer Red Leaf’s (now Piau Kee) prawn mee. Did your hubby like it…but still prefers his San Peng choice? No matter, we all have our preferences (for your info, my husband only eats Red Leaf’s prawn mee, he doesn’t like San Peng’s).
I see you had the standard small prawns (next time ask for the bigger prawns, only cost a few RM more, coz they’re super fresh and sweet tasting). I actually found this prawn mee broth to be a bit on the sweet side, that’s why I need to add in all the sambal as it makes quite a bit of difference to the taste of the broth.
Oh yes, please do more prawn mee comparisons (I love prawn mee!). After tasting this one, I’ve not found another that can beat it (I’d like to know if there are any you come across). P/S: Yeah, I’ve always wondered myself if hard-boiled egg is a standard ingredient too as I’ve eaten many that don’t include it…haiz. This Piau Kee place is super crowded in the mornings. We’ve been there on Sundays and couldn’t find seats and had to leave.
Kris, we were there on Sunday 12pm, the place was really vacant. 🙂
Since we had the San Peng first, so hubby didn’t have room for Piau Kee, but he tasted the broth and agreed that the flavour is more robust, though he still prefer his San Peng. =.=”
(Yes, I had 2 bowls of noodles that day >_<) I think I can't recommend you any prawn mee as your blog is my reference when I want to find good prawn mee. My next try would be the TTDI one, which my friend also told me it's good. Let's see!
Yess these two are both on top of my list too! Esp. the first one, mahal but good!
KY, for the portion given, I think RM9.50 is quite reasonable. But I still prefer pork meat over chicken. LOL
I just tried both recently, San Peng 3 weeks ago, piau Kee today.
Imo Both are below average compare to normal prawn mee in Klang valley. Not worth mentioning at all. Will stay away from those “legendary” kopitiam in future.
Yih, wow, you have really high standard. I really would like you to recommendations on the prawn mee that meet your standard.
I like your post. Here are some of the suggestions for prawn Mee. Each have their own good flavor and all depending on every individual taste bud 😉 for me, I’m like u, I love strong taste. And the secret lies in the soup if they are using red prawn or other type which will change the flavor. Of course the chillie too. Anyway here are some in PJ that you may try out:
1. Damansara Kim Restoran Golden Kim Wah
2. TTDI Restoran Yong Len
3. Taman Paramount Choon Prawn Mee
4. Taman Paramount Aik Prawn Mee & Laksa
Hi Ong, thank you for dropping by and really appreciate your recommendations and definitely will try them out if have chance.
Out if the 4 which is the best … description please
Totally agree . He must recommend lol since he has such high std lol
