Yen Can Cook: Starfruit Soup
I’ve recently bought a cookbook which is all about Chinese boiled soup, so expect more soup recipes will be featured here in my blog. There are many interesting recipes in that cookbook, using some unusual ingredients for boiling soup and this is one of them.
Starfruit, a distinctive fruit with five ridges on its body and it resembles a star when cut in cross-section, hence its name. They can be served as fresh fruit or made into relishes, preserves, juice drinks but boiled soup? Definitely my 1st time! Let’s check it out together!
Ingredients (Serve: 3-4)
2 starfruits
40g peanuts
15g South apricot kernels (南杏)
10g North apricot kernels (北杏)
Both apricot kernels can get from Chinese medicine shop. As I’ve mentioned in my previous recipe, the North apricot kernel (北杏) is slightly poisoning, so please consume under doctor advise.
3 honey dates (蜜枣)
8 dried figs (无花果)
1 slice of ginger
600g lean pork meat
2500ml water
Salt to season
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step 1: Clean the starfruits and cut into slices. Set aside.
Step 2: Put the pork lean meat into a pot of water and bring to boil, to remove blood and impurities. Remove, drain and set aside.
Step 3: Put all ingredients (except salt) in a pot, add in water and bring to a boil over high heat for 5 minutes. Turn to low heat and simmer for 3 hours. Season with salt.
Step 4: Serve.
This soup help to nourishing the lungs, expels heat and phlegm as well as stops cough.
HAPPY COOKING!
I have heard of papaya soup and honestly, I am not used to the idea of fruits in soups.
PH, haha, nevermind, it’s just personal preference. I just like to try more recipes for boiled soup, as long as the ingredients are easily obtain 🙂
Same with PH, not used to fruits soup ideas hehe!
But the photos you took, very nice la, lovely starfruit!
Hayley, thanks for the compliment on my photo *muaks
Actually there is no distinctive taste of the fruit as starfruit is quite bland itself. You can try try ~
I can see the end result is a very clear and healthy soup because of the use of lean pork. A very nutritious soup that I’d love though I’ve never thought of using star fruit in soups 🙂
Kris, the use of lean meat really reduce the oil in the soup and I’m happy with the outcome i would say 🙂
Err, no thanks. I’d prefer my fruits fresh 😛
Ken, I like fresh fruits too but not fresh starfruit >_< As a foodie u must be adventurous to try all kind of food mah, hehe 😛
I would like to try this soup! It’ll be interesting to see how the flavour of starfruit changes the soup 🙂
Sean, Hmm…. no distinctive taste of the starfruit as the fruit itself is quite bland but slightly impacted “sweetness” to the broth.
This is my first time hearing starfruits being used. I have eaten soups cooked with melons, apples, pears, papayas and chestnuts. I only ate starfruits because it is perfectly good to help my nose bleeding and cooled my sinus areas.
TM, starfruit definitely not the most delicious fruit to be consumed fresh but use as boiled soup ingredient is pretty interesting and kind of “sweeten” the broth 😛
First time came across this recipe.
But my mum did cook papaya and apple soup before, it really tastes nice:)
San Yi Ting, Ya, papaya and apple are pretty common for soup boiling but starfruit definitely surprised me when I saw in the recipe book!
