Goodall Cafe 万和冷气饮食中心 @ George Town, Penang
We paid a revisit to Goodall Cafe during our previous Penang trip, but this round with Jenn who was spending her year end holiday at her hometown with her family.
I let Jenn did the ordering as local always know what’s the best food to try in a food court that filled with stalls that offer wide variety of hawker food.
Char Kueh Kak
Its preparation is almost like Penang’s iconic Char Kuey Teow, Char Kueh Kak (fried rice cakes) is fried with lard, mixture of dark and light soy sauces, as well as several ingredients such as preserved radish (Choy Poh), bean sprouts, chives and egg.
What we had was an elevated version with oysters were added. Our plate of Char Kueh Kak was full of “Wok Hei” with intoxicating aroma of soy sauce concoction. The preserved radish (Choy Poh), bean sprouts, chives and egg add more textures and another layer of flavour to the dish. The oysters also another uplifting component that boosted the flavours and pleasure further.
Cuttlefish and Kangkung Salad
Locally know as Jiu Hu Eng Chai in Hokkien, it’s blanched brown cuttlefish and Kangkung (water spinach) served with sweet and tangy thick sauce and generous sprinkles of crushed peanuts and sesame seeds.
Honestly, it’s not a cheap “hawker food” (but I can’t remember the price) as the brown cuttlefish is rather costly on its own. Kangkung and brown cuttlefish sound like a odd pairing but the sweet and spicy (optional) sauce was the magical component that gelled them together. Have a good toss to let the ingredients coated evenly with the thick sauce and enjoy the multi layers of flavours and textures of the dish.
Spicy Grilled Stingray
It wasn’t the Portuguese grilled fish we’re more accustomed to eat. This was a drier rendition without any gravy and the sauce was slathered on the surface of the fish for grilling. The flavour was robust with taste of various herbs and spices. Spicy level was average and dip with the accompanied chili sauce for extra heat.
Grilled Cockles
I’m not fan of this but Jenn complained that the cockles were overcooked and many of them were not as fresh as she’d hoped.
♥Verdict: A food court that recommended by local, what do you think? ✔

That’s my hometown and all the food you ate except the Grilled Cockles are my favourite besides the CKT and Assam Laksa. I have not been to that coffee shop but will definitely make a visit since your friend recommended. So many kopitiams are fabulous in Penang.
TM, there are good food every nook and cranny in Penang, so it’s not surprise that you never been to this food court. Hope we all can indulge in those yummy food again very soon. *finger crossed
I missed eating spicy cuttlefish. Eating it with rice will really scrumptious. 🙂
Tekkaus, I don’t think this cuttlefish kangkung is paired with rice. Hehe 😛
OMG! The first two are my favorites. Must bookmark this cafe but dunno when can travel again.
PH, let’s pray hard that the latest MCO implementation can really work this time. =.=”
The kangkung & cuttlefish (I’m assuming you’ve never had it before since you mentioned that it is an odd pairing), we call it yau yee ong choy and this dish has been around for a very long time (you usually find it at hawker stalls). I seldom eat this as I don’t like the overly crunchy texture of the cuttlefish. Nowadays it’s more difficult to find as I heard people tend to shun it now because of the way the cuttlefish was preserved (not healthy or something like that). Yeah, I agree that the cockles are overcooked…it should still be bloody for best enjoyment…haha! ;D
Kris, I had You Yu Ong Choy before but I can’t said I’m a super fan though. Oh, I didn’t know that the preservation of cuttlefish is an issue that concern the consumers. Let me Google see see~
Torturing la this, I miss Penang! T_T
KY, who doesn’t. ~>_<~
