Sam Ma Chicken Rice Restaurant @ Ipoh

Missed it on my last Ipoh trip (with hubby & Sam) on early March because the queue was simply too intimidating. This time, I told my sister, “We’re having Sam Ma Chicken Rice no matter what!”


We arrived slightly before lunch circa 11.45am, thinking we’d outsmart the crowd… but nope. The queue was already there and it still took us about 30 minutes to get a table. Was it worth the wait? 

The interior – bright, air-conditioned and a bit cramped as expected.

 

A rather simple menu with poached chicken ONLY and a few side dishes to go with the staples of rice and noodles.

 

Poached Kampung Chicken (RM39.50-half bird) 
 

The chicken was exactly what you’d expect from Ipoh — tender, silky and succulent. The soy sauce wasn’t overly salty and complemented the chicken nicely.

 

Braised Chicken Feet (RM10.00)
I couldn’t believe the real star of the show was this plate of braised chicken feet submerged in dark sauce! 

Without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had. The sweet-savory braising sauce was incredibly addictive and the chicken feet were braised until they were literally falling off the bone. Every bite was packed with flavour. Certainly order or regret level!

Safe to say we didn’t leave empty-handed… we packed a few boxes home because one meal simply wasn’t enough.

Fish Ball & Meat Ball (RM1.60/pcs)

 

Kuey Teow (RM2.60)

Garlic Rice (RM1.50 – small)

Other side dishes and staples were decent.

 

Verdict: To be honest, the poached chicken was pretty standard but the braised chicken feet was divine, definitely a must try for all the chicken feet lovers! Cue every word in dictionary that is synonymous with ‘spectacular’!
