Restoran Tao Shiang Bak Kut Teh & Noodle @ Chow Kit, K.L

Restoran Tao Shiang Bak Kut Teh & Noodle is a long-established favourite, best known for its Fish Head Noodles rather than its namesake Bak Kut Teh.
The setting of the restaurant was simple and fuss-free, furnished with plastic tables and stools. The comfortability of the dining environment was well covered by sufficient wall fans and air conditioners.

The menu offered Fish Head Noodles (with fried fish or fresh fish), Meat Slices Noodles, Bak Kut Teh, Braised Pork Knuckle, Braised Chicken Feet, Poached Lettuce, as well as side dishes such as You Tiao and bean curd puffs to go with the Bak Kut Teh or noodles.

Fish Head Noodles (RM14.00/pax)

The Fish Head Noodles delivered a comforting bowl packed with ingredients: fried fish head, tofu, bean curd sheets, fish balls, tomatoes, salted mustard greens and my personal favourite — yam cubes that added a lovely creamy texture to the soup.
The broth struck a nice balance between savoury and tangy, that went well with the smooth slippery thick Meehoon. Every spoonful felt hearty & satisfying, especially with the assortment of ingredients hidden beneath the bubbling claypot.

Claypot Bak Kut Teh (RM21.00/portion)

The herbal broth of the Bak Kut Teh lacked the depth & richness that would keep us coming back for more.

Rice (RM) & You Tiao (small – RM3.00)

Verdict: After trying both, our verdict was unanimous — the Fish Head Noodles easily stole the spotlight. If you’re visiting for the first time like us, I’d say skip the Bak Kut Teh and go straight for the Fish Head Noodles. That’s where the real star of the show is.
