Restoran Lieong Kee Bae Good Teh @ Taman Kepong

One of my favourite Bak Kut Teh restaurant was awarded the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand distinction on last year and since then the restaurants (there are two outlets along Jalan Kepong) have been perpetually packed. Actually there are numerous of Bak Kut Teh restaurants in Kepong area that offer this pork ribs soup dish in different styles of broth, together with other usual dishes like dry Bak Kut Teh, Yellow Wine Chicken, braised pork, and blanched vegetables.

Lieong Kee Bae Good Teh located in Taman Kepong is one of the long standing Bak Kut Teh (BKT) restaurants in the vicinity. It was a drizzling evening, the best weather to indulge in a pot of pipping hot herbal broth, therefore restaurant was brimming with patrons who share a common love for BKT. Occupied two shoplots with plenty of tables, Lieong Kee Bae Good Teh was full house that day and there were a few groups of customer in the waiting list but I was amazed by the efficiency of the lady boss on how she managed to make arrangement on the seating and ordering. However, the food serving time took longer than we expected.

Garlic and two types of fresh chilies were provided.

Claypot Bak Kut Teh (Soup) – 2pax portion

I was delighted that the broth was light and clear which is to my liking. It poised a sweet and delicate herbal flavour, with a distinctive garlicky aftertaste and I found several garlic cloves in the soup. There were good amount of meat, sufficient for 2 eaters.

To retain the “pureness”of the herbal broth, the greens (lettuce and Chinese parsley) was served separately. This definitely earns brownie for taking their food seriously.

Dry Bak Kut Teh – 1pax portion

There is just something so addictive in the dark thick sweet sauce coating the tender pork belly meat filled with caramelized aroma. Loaded with dried chilies, okras and shredded dried squids, the dish had a good balance of slight spiciness contrasting against slightly sweet and savory flavors.

For me, BKT is best devoured with Chinese crullers (Yao Zha Guai/You Tiao), an  obligatory order for any BKT session.

Blanched Vegetables

Have you noticed that there were two different types of vegetables (Choy Sum and lettuce)? It’s recommendation from the lady boss. 😛

Verdict: Total bill came up to RM88.00 for the food above, included two small bowls of rice and a pot of Chinese Tea. Portion and price wise, considering the recent steep price tag of pork, the amount of meat given was compatible to the price. Both soup and dry BKT suit our taste buds and I can foresee more visits in the future.

  • Sometimes an award/recognition or going viral is detriment to those who have been eating at the place regularly as it brings about a perpectual crowd. >.< I also prefer a broth that's light and clear. Two types of blanched vegetables in one dish will cater to those who want a variety of vegetables. P/S: Yeah, what's with the ever increasing prices of pork…haiz! :'(

  • I am always game for a good BKT. There is one stall newly opened at Restoran 111 Damansara Utama. The BKT soup looks very light like the one you had. Those condiments of sliced chilies and garlic are a must for me. So far I have not tried the dry style BKT.

  • PH, BKT is an ideal dish that suit your carnivore diet and maybe you can have a try on the dry BKT too.

  • Still a crime to not include Klang in this whole michelin thingy. lol
