Shin Zushi @ Kota Damansara

Long queue can often be seen in front of Shin Zushi at SS2 outlet even before their opening time. The perpetual queuing scene had been cultivated my curiosity and when some of my friends shared about their pleasant dining experiences, it ignites my interest to plan a visit. And finally, we were here at one of their branches at Kota Damansara which my friend told me to be less crowded.

The waiting list on that Saturday was still bearable (there were about 3 groups of customers ahead of us) and chairs were prepared for the waiting customers.

The long and narrow dining area was rather cramped. There are bar seating, partitioned areas for customers in small group (2-6pax), as well as one big table near the entrance to accommodate bigger group.

Shin Zushi is popular for a reason – good food and value for money. Check out part of the food prices from the menu, indeed very reasonable and wallet friendly for Japanese food.

The thick menu is sufficiently filled with enough choices to keep most diners of all ages happy. There are appetizer (RM3-30), Salad (RM16-20), Temaki (RM4-8), Sashimi (RM11-110), Sushi (RM1.50-13), Maki Roll (RM4-11), fried food, Tempura and grilled food (RM9-38), Teppanyaki (RM9-27), rice, noodle and soup (RM3-20), Donburi (RM13-27) and Teishoku (RM23-43).

Green Tea (RM2.00)

Chuka Kurage (RM8.00)

Aki Nigiri (RM11.00)

There were Nigiri Sushi with Tuna, White Tuna, Salmon, Tamago & Snow Crab (stick :P). I have no complaint with the portion but the texture of the fishes was a bit dry.

Buta Shogayaki Don (RM13.00)

Generous serving of stir fried sliced pork and onion with ginger sauce topped on rice, the saucy dish is the ultimate comfort food one can ask for.

Gyu Tataki Steak (RM20.00)

The iron plate grilled beef steak was tender though I would have hope the cooking time could be a minutes lesser. The accompanied onion in butter sweet sauce complement the beef rather well.

Santen Mentai Zen (RM24.50)

There are a list of set lunch too which is good value for money. Price from RM17 to RM33, the set includes mains, green tea, salad, soup and fruit.

We opt for the set with eel with Mentaiko, torched Salmon with Mentaiko, Tamago with Mentaiko and Tori Karaage. Again, for the price charged, we were delighted with the portion and I like those long pieces of toppings on the sushi rice, which made the dish looks palatable. However, I didn’t fancy the drizzles of sweet soy sauce on it. >_<

The set lunch offers add on Chawanmushi for RM2.00 and Salmon Sashimi (RM6.00).

Verdict: The food standard and portion certainly provide good return in value and now I can totally understand why the long queue. Revisit? Absolutely yes!

  • You have reminded me that I have not had Japanese in such a long time! I would be happy to dine at a place like this where it is value for money. Especially Japanese food which tends to be heavy on the pocket.

  • PH, I worry that you will be deterred by the queue if you’re planning to dine in here. 😛

  • I can understand why there’s a long queue. The food looks good and the prices are very reasonable. The beef and set lunch (I can see the sushi is quite huge) is value for money. Is this a chain restaurant of some kind…with many branches? It’s like Sushi Mentai everywhere…with long queues at many of their branches (they also provide chairs for you to wait) because of the low(er) food prices! ;D

  • Wah memang good value just by looking at the price & dish served.

  • I like the long and narrow ambience as it is typical design in places like Kyoto, Japan. I will definitely check out this place as I eat Japanese food every week because SM is walking distance and cheap, nothing to shout.

I will be able to judge its quality at first bite!! 😂😂😂
