Beng Kee Hainan Chicken Rice @ Kepong Baru
I’m back!
I have been facing problem updating my WordPress, hence the one week hiatus. T_T Today, the website suddenly allows me to do all the updates and the photo uploading, hopefully this will last longer because this wasn’t the first time I have such issue in WordPress. 〴⋋_⋌〵 #fingercrossed
Anyway, let’s cut to the chase and focus on today’s sharing – another chicken rice shop that we visited recently, which is also a new kid on the block in the neighbourhood. Though it is fairly new to the game, Beng Kee Hainan Chicken Rice has been receiving positive response from netizens.
The food preparation station is sharing the same space with the dining area, so the the seating are quite cramped within the limited area. Apart of that, the overall environment was bright and comfy (with full blast air conditioners).
The hilarious slogan – the chicken is too smooth, please grab/hold tightly. (>▽<)
The poached chickens with very appealing yellowish skin were hanging in the counter to attract the attention of the passersby.
Beng Kee offers two types of poached chicken – Free Farm Chicken 菜园月子鸡
and Bukit Mertajam Chicken 大山脚鸡. They can be ordered ala carte or rice set, just like what we had. In addition to that, the menu also covers double boiled soups (RM6.90 – 11.90), congee (RM3.90 – 10.90), fish noodles (RM15.90 & 16.90), braised food (braised meat, braised egg and braised tofu – RM3.00 – 12.90), snacks (RM8.90 – 14.90), dessert soups (RM5.90) and beverages.
Free Farm Chicken Set (Breast – RM16.90 & Thigh – RM18.90)
The rice set was rather wholesome which came with not only chicken and rice, but also half a braised egg and some bean sprouts.
The rice with a pleasant glutinous texture was fluffy and delicious, with good dose of flavours from the chicken broth, Pandan leaves, ginger and other.
The chicken looked sublime with bright yellow skin which is not too fatty. The meat was tenderly smooth and rather succulent.
Other than the usual chicken rice chili sauce and ginger spring onion sauce, the additional chili sauce tasted similar with Thai chili sauce, and these sauces were well executed to enhance the chook just right.
I’m afraid I did not like the chilled braised egg because it tasted sweet.
Seabass Fish Noodle (RM15.90)
There were options of fried or fresh fish and curry broth (for fresh fish only). Noodle choices were thick or thin vermicelli. The portion of the fish fillet + fish head was generous for the price charged. I’m glad to see fried diced yam but the milky broth wasn’t really memorable. It lack of the appetizing acidity from the tomato and the scarce amount of pickled veggie was a let down too.
Black Sesame Dessert (RM5.90)
Nutty, thick, creamy and not too sweet, nice!
Verdict: Definitely a good place to head to for a decent Hainanese chicken rice meal.

Lol…poached chicken, fish head noodles & porridge are the very things my family doesn’t like to eat (but my favourites)! I do like the colour of the rice. That 3rd condiment looks like some kind of cooked sambal with onions. Actually, Bukit Mertajam chicken is already nice enough, better than regular poached chicken for sure but not as good in flavour of the meat in terms of kampung/farm chicken.
