One Brick Drop @ Jalan Damai, K.L

One Brick Drop is new kid on the block on Jalan Damai, KL, which opened its door less than a month ago. This bungalow lot used to be the Laos’ Embassy and now turns into a restaurant which also can be a venue for events or workshops. It also houses a dessert shop and a floral shop.

The interior is bright (thank you to the huge glass window), airy and spacious. Sleek metal chairs, modern steel fixtures, and exposed concrete ceilings give the restaurant a contemporary & intentionally unpolished vibe.

The menu showcases wide varieties of Japanese food, Western food, as well as some appealing fusion Japanese dishes such as Truffle Foie Gras Don & Honey Ranch Tai.

Engawa Handroll (RM19.00)

Unagi Handroll (RM16.00)

I didn’t get to try these handrolls, but my friend loved them – no surprise, since they’re  one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

Tomato Salad (RM32.00)

The dish was visually arresting with vibrant colours from the cherry tomatoes, Burrata, tomato confit puree and chives oil. The presence of the guava strips and strawberry wedges were rather weird though. The tomato puree was tangy and appetizing but the chives oil’s flavour didn’t quite come through.

Burnt Cabbage (RM26.00)

The East meets West of grilled cabbage with butter and miso tofu sauce was quite compelling. Addition of crispy shrimp chili took the dish to a whole other level (I was hoping for more chili). 😛

Pesto Ikura Risotto (RM49.00)

The flavour of the Risotto turned out pretty much as expected – herbaceous and light nutty. The Ikura was a little too scarce for the price charged, would have been better if there’s more.

Engawa Claypot Rice (RM63.00)

The claypot rice with Teriyaki sauce was a vibrant composition of Engawa, Ebiko, fried garlic, sweet preserved radish and crispy chicken skin, which provided various of textures and flavours. A few of my friends found it a bit on salty side, but I had no issues with that.

Angus Striploin with Chimichurri (RM65.00)

Black Angus striploin was tender and decently charred on the outer. Mashed potato added creaminess to the dish while the Chimichurri offered a zesty kick to the overall flavour.

Chili Crab Pasta (RM55.00)

Fettucine doused in chili crab sauce, topped with raw egg yolk and grated Parmesan. The distinctive crustaceous flavour was noticeably in that rich, thick sauce but it was a tad too salty for our liking.

Verdict: The meal leaned more towards hit-and-miss, and the premium pricing wasn’t quite justified by the execution. A return visit seems unlikely for now.

  • Ya, premium prices for small portions…sorry it was a hit-and-miss for you but at least the dishes you had were quite unique like the pesto ikura risotto, burnt cabbage & engawa claypot rice.
