Breakfast Thieves @ APW, Bangsar

I’m totally an outdated food blogger.

Breakfast Thieves, a popular breakfast spot that nestled in APW, Bangsar which started operation on 2016, but I only had chance to visit just recently. The cafe is the twin sister of original Breakfast Thieves in Fitzroy Melbourne, Australia which is often listed as one of the top 5 cafes in Melbourne. (Remind me of the cafe that I visited during my Melbourne trip ♥)

The glasshouse-inspired cafe creates an unbroken connection between the interior and exterior space, features a minimalist design with the use of simple raw furnishing of woods and steels. Illumination comes from the natural light as well as the hanging light bulbs.

The menu isn’t really extensive, it offers modern Australian cuisine with a touch of Asian influences.

Rice Bowl (RM35.00)

The rice bowl was brimming with condiments including chilled potato salad, Ebiko, avocado and tomato salsa, pickled cucumber, onsen egg and shredded lettuce.

OK, what I like about the dish – that thick cut of pan fried Salmon fillet with super crispy skin and tender flesh. Delicious potato salad as well as the appetizing pickled cucumber and avocado and tomato salsa. It was like everything you expected it to be but……when all mixed together, the contrast temperature, textural and flavours of the combination didn’t work harmoniously.  (´ω`)

Bastardized Rice (RM46.00)

The platter featuring Wagyu Char Siew and poached chicken leg served with rice, soup, side dishes and two dipping of chili lime sauce and spiced ginger.

The chicken schmaltz rice was fluffy and infused with delish chicken essence.

Both poached chicken and Wagyu Char Siew were tender and succulent, with the flavour of the latter was more notable. It was savoury and poised a mild smokiness yet at the same time retained good dose of beefy flavour.

cucumber & bean sprouts banchan and soup.

Uncle Foo (RM35.00)

Sandwiched in a soft brioche bun, there were crumbed soft shell crab smeared with a robust homemade chilli crab sauce, fried egg, sliced cheese and cabbage slaw, served up with a side of crunchy mixed potato fries. The fried soft shell crab was tender, coated with crunchy breadcrumb, guarantee satisfaction in every bite.

Verdict: Overall, our dining experience at Breakfast Thieves was relatively pleasant however, I thought that the choices in the menu need to be expanded to cater more preference varieties.

  • Ya, I was here many years back and remembered a having a good brunch & coffee (parking is challenging, that’s why I’ve not been back). I gather you were here for lunch based on the choice of dishes. I don’t know how their lunch fare stack up to their more famous/popular breakfast items though (they’re not called Breakfast Thieves for nothing…lol). As to your first dish, I think the flavours didn’t work together (when mixed up) maybe because they were meant to be eaten separately since it’s not a poke bowl. Well, at least you did enjoy the taste of each component. ^_~
