PJ Old Town Hawker Centre @ Jalan Othman, P.J

The food hunting Sunday is my most anticipated day of the week. Hubby and I will be exploring new makan places and trying out food that have been in my to-try-list. This was a Sunday on last month where we first had brunch at a randomly chose eatery nearby the place we ran errands (which I have yet blogged :P) and continued to our second round of makan-makan at PJ Old Town Hawker Centre.

Operating for over 60 years, PJ Old Town Hawker Centre is one of the oldest in Petaling Jaya and has withstood the test of time alongside some of its long-standing stalls. Seating is ample but I heard that some vendors have their “marked seating area”, so ask before getting your seat.

Food choices are aplenty here, ranging from Chinese (Bak Kut Teh, Siew Chao, pork Satay, Yong Tau Foo, Ice Kacang, chicken rice, Wonton Mee, etc), Malay (Nasi Berlauk) to Indian (banana leaf rice, Kacang Putih) dishes. According to the Google Review, there are several highly recommended food in this PJ Old Town Hawker Centre such as the banana leaf rice, Ice Kacang, chicken rice and pork Satay. But since we just had our brunch before coming, we only managed to try some light food as below.

Stall 48 – Jessie’s Special ABC & it’s price list.

This is one of the recommended Ice Kacang stalls in this food court, another one is stall 46 Weng Kee/Auntie Peggy’s Classic, and both of them have their own supporters.

ABC Ice Kacang (RM4.00)

It really had me singing for joy when I saw my bowl of Ice Kacang was generously crowned with thick and sweet Gula Melaka syrup in deep brown hue. Underneath the finely shaved ice were all the necessary condiments such as peanut, cream corn, red bean and slivers of Cendol. Since I love everything with Gula Melaka, this unquestionably hit the spot.

Stall 36 Gerai Satay Cina Thoo Yuen – manned by an old couple.

Pork Satay (RM2.00/skewer)

Since Pork Satay is not commonly available everywhere and we are fan of this delicacy, so it was no brainer that we had to try it!

Price wise, it is more expensive than the Sen Kee Satay that we frequented but the size of the portion of skewer didn’t seem like bigger than the latter. The Satay contained fat and lean meat and they were sufficiently marinated with delightful flavour of herbs and spices, however the distinctive smokiness wasn’t as pronounced.

Verdict: We were happy with the food we ordered that day and this place certainly warrant a revisit to indulge the Ice Kacang again as well as check out other food offering.

  • PJ Old Town Hawker Centre seems like a gem, operating for over 60 years and still going strong! 🙌 It’s amazing how it has stood the test of time alongside its long-standing stalls. The seating situation is interesting though, with some vendors having their “marked seating area”! Good tip to ask before grabbing a seat. 😅

And let’s talk about the food choices, they’re absolutely mouthwatering! From Chinese delights like Bak Kut Teh, Siew Chao, pork Satay, and Wonton Mee, to Malay dishes like Nasi Berlauk, and Indian treats like banana leaf rice and Kacang Putih, the variety is impressive! 🍜🍚🍢 No wonder there are highly recommended dishes like banana leaf rice, Ice Kacang, chicken rice, and pork Satay. I’m already drooling!

  • Your descriptions of the Ice Kacang and Pork Satay from Stall 48 and 36 are making my taste buds tingle! 🤤 The Ice Kacang with generous Gula Melaka syrup sounds absolutely divine, and I’m a huge fan of everything Gula Melaka too! 🍧 And as for the Pork Satay, even though it’s more expensive, it’s a delicacy worth trying, especially since it’s not commonly available everywhere. The marination with herbs and spices must have added such a delightful flavor to the skewers! Yum!

  • I thought….what…that’s it…one cendol and 5 sticks of satay…where got enough! Then I remembered you said this was round 2…lol! P/S: I love pork satay too…sometimes I’d like to order 5 sticks but too shy to order that amount…like so sikit….hehehe! 😀

  • Whenever I’m here the chicken rice is surely something I order.
