Restoran Char Siew Yoong @ Cheras

My food hunting after my facial appointment this round brought me to one of the popular restaurants for Char Siew in Klang Valley – Restaurant Char Siew Yoong that located at Jalan Pudu Ulu, Cheras. The restaurant is nestled in a row of old shop lots behind PGRM building, find parking is a bit of a hassle.

We were there slightly after their opening hours (10.40am) and the restaurant was almost fully occupied. The dining area with simple setting was bright and fully air-conditioned. Ordering was swift and we weren’t provided with menu but I believe you can always ask for recommendation from the staff.

Char Siew Yoong has been pleasing customers with its legendary Char Siew (barbequed pork) for years. Strips of Char Siew in golden amber lacquer were hanging in the glass counter at the entrance to entice every customers.

Total bill for the lunch that day was RM51.30, included the food below and a cup of herbal tea and two plates of rice.

Spicy Sour Vegetables

Laden with soften Chinese mustard greens, meat pieces, tamarind slices and dried chilies, submerged in an intensely flavoured spicy and sour gravy, which was really appetizing.

Char Siew & Siew Yoke

Gleaming in a deep mahogany colour with a lovely charred edges, the Char Siew was well caramelized with pleasant smoky and sweet flavour. The lean meat was soft and the fat was tender with almost melt-in-our-mouth texture.

The Siew Yoke had a delightful crackly skin and the meat was nicely flavoured too but we  were given fatter cut of meat which was not to our liking.

Watercress Soup

An hearty and satisfying double boiled soup with chicken feet and pork ribs, both were fall-off-the-bones tender after hours of boiling.

Verdict: Char Siew Yoong undoubtedly scores up to my expectation and I have no hesitation in recommending this place for those who like sticky and caramelized Char Siew.

  • Yeah, this place is well-known for its char siew. Yes, I’ve been here…I thought the char siew was decent (still better than a lot out there) but my son (for some reason) don’t share the same sentiment. Perhaps time for a revisit though the prices seem a bit steep (I think the portion of meat you had was probably around RM25 for a portion that’s a bit small). The soup & sour veggie maybe RM10 each. There’s one thing that’s pretty good here…the braised chicken feet!;)

    • Kris, everyone has their preference for Char Siew and this version suit our (hubby & I) taste bud, so will certainly pay a revisit again, most probably after my facial appointment in the future. 🙂

  • The char siew looks fantastic! The spicy sour vegetable soup also look vey good. I love that soup but have not cooked it because I can’t get nice roasted pork legs. I used to go to Menara PGRM long ago because LHDN Cheras office was there. Dunno if they are still there or not.

  • PH, I think roasted pork leg only can get from Siew Yoke stall from morning market? Because I never see any in supermarket and my mom helped me to get a roasted pork leg for boiling soup from morning market too.
