Taste of Medan @ Taman Sri Sinar, Kepong

I have been wanting to try out the Taste of Medan since I read the postings from my IG friend. So one day after Sam’s tuition, I suggested to have our lunch at the Taste of Medan which just located in the nearby neighbourhood from the tuition center.

The restaurant is nestled in a less happening commercial area, houses variety of offices, retail shops and eateries. The setting of the restaurant is simple with food display counter on one side and dining area furnished with wooden tables and benches on another side.

I have been to several cities in Indonesia included Bali, Bandung and Lombok, but never been to Medan. I believe those cities share similarity on food (except Bali which offers good amount of Non Halal dishes), so I can found many familiar dishes in their menu such as assorted Nasi dishes, included Nasi Lemak with different lauk (dish). From the simplest Fried Egg to some classic ones like Ayam Goreng Berempah, Sambal Sotong, Ayam Rendang, Sambal Petai Prawn and Rendang Beef (from RM9.90-18.90). Other Nasi dish options are Lontong Sayur Medan (RM13.90), Nasi Campur Medan (RM13.90), Nasi Tim Ayam (RM13.90), Nasi Soto Ayam (RM15.90), Nasi Kuning with Ayam Goreng Berempah, Beef Rendang or Ayam Rendang (RM18.90-21.90). There are noodle dishes (Mee Bakso, Mee Bebek, Mee Ayam Jamu), Gado-Gado, snacks (Pie Tee, Tahu Isi, Sate Uni, & etc), ala carte dishes (Perkedel, Telur Balado, Keripik Kentang, Acar Medan, Sayur Gulai, & etc), and varied types of toasts to complete the menu.

Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang (RM15.90)

It’s a large platter of rice with different condiments. There are the main dish – Chicken Rendang, Sambal, fried peanuts and Tempeh (fermented soybeans), stir fried glass noodles, shredded omelet, stir fried French Beans fresh sliced cucumber and hard boiled egg.

The chicken drumstick was smothered with creamy and spice laden Rendang sauce. Other condiments were nicely executed as well, complemented the coconut infused rice (topped with Kerisik – toasted desiccated coconut) perfectly.

Nasi Kuning Ayam Goreng Berempah (RM20.90)

With the same condiments as above Nasi Lemak, with extra Acar (spicy vegetables pickle), my Nasi Kuning was a fully loaded platter that can be shared by two small eater.

The spiced fried chicken whole leg although not the crunchiest I’ve eaten but it showcased a satisfying dimensions of flavours.

I also like the Acar. It was appetizingly spicy and nutty. I was struggling to finish such a huge portion of food and at the end there was some leftover rice. (´・ω・`)

Two types of Sambal were provided, both lent a punchy kick to the dishes and they tasted as great as those I had at Indonesia.

Mee Bakso (RM16.90)

Only available on Saturday and Sunday, hubby opted for this Indonesian Beef Balls Noodle Soup. There were two types of Bakso – the bigger ones were more bouncy and denser in texture while the smaller ones had a more “rustic” which we still can see and taste the ground beef texture.

The broth was light tasting with pleasing beefy and spice nuances.

Verdict: A rather satiated lunch I would said, considering the food and price were easily beat my expectation.
