Celyn Resort Kinabalu @ Ranau, Sabah

I was at Kota Kinabalu early this year when Chinese New Year with my family for a 3D2N trip. We picked up our rented cars (Car rental info can be found at the end of the post) at KK airport and traveled all the way up to Kundasang. The journey took us about approximately 2 hours and the  roads are a bit hilly but nothing that requires a compulsory 4 wheel-drive maneuvering.

Our first night at Sabah was spent at Celyn Resort Kinabalu. The location of the resort was quite tricky, please take extra attention to the small signboard at road side which can be easily missed. Turn into a junction from the main road and the small road leading up to the resort was quite challenging, steep, rocky and winding that stretches for about 3-4km.

Reception counter and the in-house restaurant (Bunga Raya Cafe) where the buffet breakfast is served. Wifi only available here but the signal was quite slow on our visit.

We booked 4 rooms at Valley Wing with private balcony overlooking the view of the valley and forest surrounding Mount Kinabalu. For a better Mount Kinabalu view, get a room at Kinabalu Wing, upper floor to be precise as per recommended in Tripavisor.

Our room was basic and rather dated. Equipped with a queen size bed, ceiling fan, wardrobe with a “smelly” bathrobe, TV and DVD player, dressing table and a wooden chair. I felt really uncomfortable when my feet stepped on the cold tile floor. It’s advisable to bring your own indoor slipper if you don’t want to walk on these chilled floor.

Please beware that leaving the glass sliding door open could attract moth/other insect to fly into your room.

The bed was firm and not really comfortable for my liking.

Extra bed is charged at RM65.00/bed/night.

A TV with limited channels selection and the reception was very poor. There is also a DVD player but you have to bring your own DVDs.

Dressing table, hair dryer, complimentary drinking water and basic coffee making facilities.

The bathroom was quite sad looking with stains all over the shower area, tiles and WC. Hot water comes in a mini boiler, just nice for a 10-15 min shower before the hot water runs out. Wait another 15-20mins before the next shower. Basic toiletries such as shower gel, shampoo and towels are provided.

The kids can’t wait to explore the place. At a temperature of between 15º c – 32ºc, take a slow stroll around the resort is really enjoyable.

Surrounded by luscious flora & fauna, it is indeed a great escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Verdict: The room might not in top notch condition and definitely need a lot of improvements. However the excellent views surrounding well compensated the overall experience. Stay tune for next post of our meals at their in-house restaurant ~ Cafe Bunga Raya.
