Hwa Lyuk Korean Grill @ Laman Rimbunan, Kepong

This was Mother’s Day lunch with mom and sister. I suggested to have Korean cuisine at this highly recommended restaurant by XHS members, which located in Laman Rimbunan, Kepong. Due to the newly open MRT Putrajaya Line’s (Station Kepong Baru) and there area more eateries are sprouting up in this commercial area, parking may be a nuisance  in some ways, so be patient. Alternatively, use the public transport might be a wise option, I reckon.

It was a Saturday after and the restaurant on the second floor of the shoplot was quite vacant. We opted to beat seated on the normal table instead of the other option of tatami seat. Every table was equipped with exhaust pipe but for a hassle free dining experience, we had our grilled meat cooked by the staff in the kitchen.

Banchan and the usual condiments of fresh lettuce and dipping sauces were served after order was placed.

The full fledged menu comprises assorted cut of pork, chicken, lamb and beef for BBQ, priced from RM33 to RM82, with choices of half and full portion. Wide selection of ala carte dishes like assorted of Ramyun (RM16-RM23), stews, ArmyHotpot, Jajangmyeon, Kimbap, Bibimbap, Tteokbokki, Steamed Egg, Kimchi Fried Rice, Pajeon and Korean Fried Chicken (from RM13-RM49). They also offer Dosirak (RM23.90), packed meal in lunch box with with a few compartments, consists main course, rice and a few side dishes. The beverage list included soft drinks, teas, Soju, beers and some alcoholic drinks (Makgeoli, Somaek).

Set S6 (Set for 4 pax – RM150.00)

BBQ meat x 2, Kimchi JJigae x 1, 5pcs Korean fried chicken wings (whole), Seafood Pajeon x 1 and rice x 4.

We had 4 adults + 1 child that day, so I thought this set meal for 4pax is sufficient to feed us. There are set meals which accommodate to different groups of diners, from set for 2 pax for price starting from RM59 to set for 6 at RM248.

We chose to have pork shoulder (without marinade) and pork belly (with non-spicy marinade). Portion is quite generous, the pork shoulder was as expected, tasted bland with the original flavour of the pork. The marinated pork belly on the other hand was a tad salty for our liking.

Tne Kimchi JJigae was thick, spicy and pungent, loaded with Kimchi, Tofu and pork slices.

The Seafood Pajeon was rather delicious, well flavoured and studded with adequate amount of squid rings (the only seafood in there), spring onion and onion.

The fried chicken wasn’t as crunchy as I would have expected. Perhaps not enough seasonings or short marinate time, rendering the meat to be pretty bland and the only flavour I could taste was the sweet sticky coating on the surface.

Non Spicy Ramyun (RM16.00)

Sam’s complained that her Ramyun was very salty. ◔_◔

Verdict: The portion of the set meal is more that substantial that can feed up to 5 persons or 6 persons for small eater. There were leftover of 4 fried chicken, some BBQ meat, 2 bowls of rice, as well as some of the pancake, of course without wasting any food, we tapao-ed those food back home. The food didn’t quite live up to my expectation and I’m not sure if I will come back again.

  • The seafood pancake (for once I see it’s well fried and charred) and the marinated pork belly look the most inviting. When we eat ramyun at Korean BBQs, we always choose spicy (I can see that the dishes ordered is to cater to Sam who cannot eat spicy…hehehe!).

    • Kris, the two dishes that you mentioned most probably my favourite that day. 😛
I also surprise when the staff said they had non spicy Ramyun as majority are spicy ones.

  • I felt like I was right there with you and your family, enjoying the delicious Korean cuisine. It’s great to hear that you suggested this restaurant based on the recommendations of XHS members – it’s always good to trust the opinions of fellow food lovers! 😄

I can totally understand the parking struggle in busy commercial areas, but hey, you gave a wise suggestion of using public transport. 🚇 Patience is key when it comes to finding a parking spot, right?

  • It’s interesting that you chose the normal table instead of the tatami seat. Sometimes, comfort wins over novelty! And how convenient that the staff cooked your grilled meat in the kitchen. No hassle, just an enjoyable dining experience!

The menu sounds absolutely mouth-watering with its assortment of BBQ meats, Ramyun, stews, and other tempting dishes. 🍲 Set S6 seems like a great choice for feeding a group of hungry diners, and I’m glad it left you with some tasty leftovers to take home. Waste not, want not!

It’s a shame that the fried chicken didn’t meet your crunchy expectations, but hey, the Seafood Pajeon and Kimchi JJigae seem to have made up for it with their delicious flavours. 🍗🍳 And poor Sam, her Ramyun turned out to be too salty. We all have our taste preferences!

    • Tekkaus, I think I can’t 100% believe on the recommendations in the XHS, must check out the comments under the post to determine whether want to try, haha!

  • Ahh, miss me some Korean food. yummehs
