Nam Chuan Hainan Kopitiam @ SS6, P.J
This was probably the most underwhelming breakfast experience for us thus far….. Not that the food or service was bad but it’s because our previous breakfast hunting were remarkably pleasurable. (like THIS, THIS & THIS, or the whole breakfast series HERE)
Recommended by an ex-colleague of hubby, we came to this Nam Chuan Hainan Kopitiam area in SS6 that we’re not familiar with. Parking can be slightly challenging in this area, so be patient.
With a seating capacity that spanning over 3 shoplots, getting a table at Nam Chuan shouldn’t be a problem.
There are decent amount of stalls which offer food such as Chee Cheong Fun, Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak, Yong Tau Foo, Char Kuey Teow, Curry Noodles, Wonton Mee and the Taiwanese Braised Pork (photo above) looked extremely tempting but I’m not coming for this. (⊃‿⊂)
Other than the usual Kopitiam offerings, Nam Chuan’s menu has some special items like Cucur Udang, Chicken Curry Toast, Hong Kong Polo Bun, Hotdog, freshly made Donut and Butter Sugar Sticks.
Iced Hainan Kopi (RM4.00) & Song Song Bing (RM5.00)
Song Song Bing is one of their recommended drinks which is a very refreshing concoction of sour plum, lemon, lime and soda water.
Coffee to go in special packaging.
I was aiming on the Wonton Mee for this visit due to the commendable reviews online.
Price list.
Dumpling Wonton Mee (Small – RM9.50)
Cooked to a nice al-dente texture, the Wonton noodle was tossed in savoury soy sauce mixture, infused with aromatic pork lard oil.
The dumplings were not bad, filled with adequately seasoned pork + vegetables filling.
Attracted by the Gold Award accolade displayed at the stall, hubby decided to give this Ipoh Curry Mee a try.
Curry Noodles with Siew Yoke (RM10.00)
Differs from the Penang version of creamy coconut milk based broth, the blend of spices (curry paste) is the soul of Ipoh Curry Mee. This rendition was thick and sufficiently creamy, but also embodied the distinctive grainy texture which provided a spice-riddled nuances of the curry in every mouthful.
Verdict: Hmm….. both noodle dishes were just passable and I’ve definitely tried better ones elsewhere. So I will say that it’s not one that I would come back again. ( ̄ω ̄;)

We eat curry mee and wantan mee so often that finding one that’s not better than some we’ve ate before is highly likely. It’s the prominence of the curry powder taste in Ipoh curry mee that make it my least favourite style of curry mee. The one you had look more like a KL curry than Ipoh-style curry mee coz where’s the mint lah? Hehehe! ;P
Kris, good to have comparison so that we know which is good or bad. I don’t know mint is essential condiment for Ipoh curry mee.
Haiks. I thought I should try the Gold Award curry noodles but your verdict is not encouraging. I better stick to Annie-1’s.
TM, it’s Ipoh style, maybe you like it ler….
