Restoran Shang Kee (Ulu Yam Loh Mee) @ Batang Kali
I planned a short trip to explore the North side of Selangor, to be precise Ulu Yam at Hulu Selangor district 3 weeks ago. Restoran Shang Kee located in Batang Kali was the first stop for us to fill our tummy.
The restaurant has a very old school and simple set up, but rest assured the dining area is clean (with Grade A cert being displayed :P) and airy.
Service was good and the restaurant can be quite busy on weekend, so waiting is inevitable.
Menu in full Chinese on the white board, but you can always ask for recommendations from the staff. The list was’t extensive with several fried noodles such as Loh Mee, Hokkien Mee/Meehoon, fried meehoon with canned stewed pork (Kou Rou Meehoon), Kong Fu Chao, as well as side dishes like fish cakes, fried Wonton, fried Fuzuk, Nam Yue Fried Pork, fried meat roll, Kong Pao Squid and blanced Choy Sum.
Ulu Yam Loh Mee (Small-RM8.00)
Wholesome and rustic, the braised thick yellow noodles submerged in a dark and thick starchy broth. The thick eggy broth had a mild sourness note from the vinegar. The Loh Mee was good but not outstanding.
Hokkien Mee (Medium-RM14.00)
Had this on my second visit with family before we checked in to our airbnb at Ulu Yam for staycation on last week.
The Hokkien Mee here was more a “saucy” version with the thick noodles were well braised in dark aromatic soy sauce, laden with pork slices, Choy Sum and the essential lardy bits.
Fried Meehoon with Canned Stewed Pork (Small-RM24.00)
Every strand of Meehoon was lusciously coated with flavourful sauce accompanied by chunks of tender stewed pork belly and crunchy fried pork lard. The whole dish was irreproachable in taste and texture.
Nam Yue Fried Pork (Small-RM18.00)
Well marinated pork belly fried to perfectly crunchy, what’s not to like.
Fried Wonton (Small-RM13.00)
The light and crispy Wonton skin produced a satisfying and audible crunchy on each bite. If I had to comment, it would be the meat filling which was a bit scarce. 😛
♥Verdict: A decent choice if you want to have Ulu Yam Loh Mee but of course there’re many other choices in Ulu Yam small town itself.
Check out THIS one at Ulu Yam that I tried many years ago.
Restoran Shang Kee (Ulu Yam Loh Mee)
49, Jalan Meranti 2A, 44300 Batang Kali, Selangor.
Operating hours: Unknown, close on Monday.
This lor mee with dark black sauce is quite different from the lor mee we get in KL. Ours look more like kong fu chow except it’s cooked with thick Hokkien mee. I’d enjoy fried meehoon with canned stew pork but it’s not easy to find places that cook this type of noodles. >.<
Kris, my brother in law commented the Loh Mee exactly same like you!
I know a few places which serve fried meehoon with canned stew pork, but they are rather far for you, like Kepong and Batu Caves.
that nam yue pork looks great, i’m not a huge fan of central area loh mee tho.
KY, sure I know you can’t resist fatty meat like Nam Yue Pork. 😛
Actually I don’t like Loh Mee, either central nor Northern version. =.=”

The loh mee gravy is quite sour. Not to my liking.
May Yap, too much vinegar =.=”
