Sae Ma Eul BBQ @ Bandar Menjalara, Kepong

Today’s post is a restaurant review.

I know dine-in is not allowed in states affected by the Movement Control Order 2.0 (MCO 2.0), but hopefully with the re-implement of MCO this time, all of us do our part to break the chain once again.

Sae Ma Eul BBQ, a well established Korean restaurant with several outlets in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor. Their outlet in Solaris Mont Kiara which was perpetually packed and crowded always caught my attention whenever I passed by. Until recently, I had chance to visit it, but not the aforementioned forever-busy Solaris Mont Kiara outlet but the one nearer to my place at Bandar Menjalara.

The indoor dining area was spacious with tables arranged neatly within the space and every table was equipped with exhaust pipe. Decor was minimalist with usual K-pop artists posters adorning the walls, as well as TV playing Korean show. Outdoor seating also available too on the walkway outside the restaurant.

To save the hassle, we opted for the RM75 set from the BBQ Set Menu which consisted of charcoal Bulgogi with spicy sauce, pork skin with soy sauce marinade, pork belly, oyster mushrooms and a can of beer.

The ala carte menu boasted a familiar range of offerings such as various cut of meat included pork, chicken, beef and lamb as well as smoked duck, baby octopus and shrimps for barbeque. A delectable list of soups, pancakes, noodle and rice dishes can be found as well to tempt your taste bud.

Unlimited refill of banchan (side dishes) and water.

The usual condiments for barbequed meat – Fresh lettuce, garlic, green chilies, Korean chili sauce and sesame salt dipping.

Pig skin for Korean BBQ, definitely first time for me and I’m sure this will be my last time too. Read on to find out why. (;゚Д゚)

While most of the Korean restaurants that I’ve been gave choices of grilling the meat ourselves or the staff do the grilling and serve to us. But here, you have to do it yourself. Sae Ma Eul uses charcoal for the grill hence the control of the heat really need skill and experience. It was a bit unmanageable especially the flare-ups when the fat dripping onto hot coals and rendered a few burnt meat pieces. T_T

Overly-grilled pig skin that became charcoal. LOL & grilled pig skin (those small pieces at the back) which we really didn’t know how to appreciate. >_<

Free ice cream potong after the meal.

♥Verdict: The portion of the set we had certainly insufficient for a group of 2-3 persons, even though we are not really a big eater. As you can see, there’s only meat in the set with no other dishes like soup, noodles or rice, which undoubtedly not filling enough.

One of the staffs came over to assist us when she saw we created a mess during the flare-ups but we did most of the grilling ourselves. The quality of the meat and side dishes was alright but nothing particularly worth mentioning. It would be hard to be convinced for a revisit because I have a few better options in this area if I want a Korean BBQ meal.
