Melbourne Trip 2019 – Breakfast Time!
One of the perks of staying at CBD at multi-cultural Melbourne is the various food options, sweetened by the budget friendly prices due to the large students population there. As mentioned in my previous post, our Airbnb area (Elizabeth Street and surrounding) is dotted with cafes and restaurants, from Korean cuisine, Japanese cuisine, Malaysian food to Chinese food.
For breakfast alone, you are torned between D-I-Y breakfast from ingredients at the awesome Queen Victoria Market (sausages, ham, bread, egg, vegetables and fruits) or explored the dining options within the vicinity. Here’s are a few places that we’ve tried.
Located just one block away from our Airbnb, this small restaurant served savoury pancakes as well as a long a list of hot and cold beverages. There are only 5-6 counter seats in the shop and most of the patrons had their food takeaway.
We had their weekday special which consisted of a crisps pancake + red/mung bean & pearl barley congee, for AU$9.90
The crisps pancake is made from an eggy pancake, wrapped with filling of crispy crisps, pickled mustard plant stem (zha cai), spring onion, coriander, lettuce and your choice of sauce(s) such as sweet bean paste sauce, homemade spicy sauce, BBQ sauce, mustard, mayonnaise and Nando’s Peri Peri sauce. Cooked upon order, the pancake was huge in portion with generous filling.
We opted for red bean & pearl barley congee. Big serving as well, this set was certainly sufficient for two small eater. I barely tasted any sweetness in the congee, a tad too bland for my liking but it was served pipping hot which was very much needed to warm our body up in cold weather.

There are a couple shopping malls in the area we stayed like QV Square (in Queen Victoria Village) and Melbourne Central which come with broad range of food outlets included food court with many food options under one roof. We had our breakfast at the food court at Melbourne Central.
Fresh & Co. – offers wide range of fresh salads, sandwiches, wraps, pasta and a variety of pastries.
Grain Bowl – Teriyaki Beef (Regular: AU$10.90)
The grain bowl looked appetizingly vibrant with all the colourful ingredients such as mesclun, corn kernels, capsicum, edamame, pickled vegetables and poached egg on bed of brown rice and quinoa. It’s healthy yet delicious, I can have this everyday!

Verdict: Other than the above, there are a lot more options at this area such as grab-and-go breakfast from convenience stores or breakfast menu offered by the fast food chains like McDonald’s or Hungry Jack’s which are within short walking distance as well.

When I read red bean & pearl barley congee….I thought that will be a rather weird porridge. Phew, luckily your next pic showed it was actually a tong sui (sweet soup)…not congee! >_< And your crisp pancake looked completely different from the menu, the one you got looked like murtabak…haha! 😀
Kris, yeah, more like a unsweetened Tong Sui 😛
that grain bowl sure looks appealing – actually, everything you ordered throughout this post would certainly tempt me! 🙂
Sean, I’m glad that the food we tried throughout the trip was rather good.
That teriyaki beef bowl thingy looks good!
KY, good choice from the hubby, at least, haha!
