Fat Mum Curry Mee @ Kepong Ulu

My food hunting excursion this round brought us to this little restaurant nestled in Kampung Kepong Ulu, stone’s throw away from FRIM

We were greeted by this enticing pot of curry soup with bean curd puffs that fully absorbed the broth floating on the surface. The furnishing of the restaurant was a bit shabby with the cooking station occupied the front part of the space while the dining area was further inside the shop. There were several tables placed outside the restaurant as well.

Small selection of biscuits, snacks and ready to eat frozen food for sale.

Fat Mum Curry Mee’s menu was peerlessly compact, even the most indecisive customer won’t take long to order. Curry Mee, Wonton Mee, Char Kuey Teow, soup noodles, curry Chee Cheong Fun and Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun were all they offered.

Curry Mee (RM8.00)

Our bowls of Curry Mee looked legit from its appearance. The curry broth in bright orange hue, with all essential ingredients such as bean curd puffs, fresh cockles, sliced Char Siew and bean sprouts. However, the broth wasn’t really impressive to me. It was a bit watery and didn’t taste predominantly of curry spices. It also lacked that creamy taste of coconut milk.

Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun (RM6.50)

I know many of you would think of those Chee Cheong Fun (CCF) with filling of either prawns or Char Siew when mention about Hong Kong CCF. But the one I had here was another type which is more like a Hong Kong street food – basic rice roll dressed in an interesting combination of peanut sauce and brown sauce. The sweet and savoury flavour of the sauce concoction appealed to me but some might find the combination was weird (for example my mom >_<), perhaps she just used to the usual CCF sauce. I would have appreciated a thicker peanut sauce for extra creaminess and better coating to the rice rolls. (っˆڡˆς)

Verdict: The Curry Mee was rather average in my book but I’ll come back for the peanut sauce CCF as I never found this elsewhere.
