Stacks @ SS15, Subang Jaya

We needed to run errands at Subang area last Sunday. Since we don’t usually come to this part of town, I suggested to have a meet up with a friend who staying nearby and our gathering place or to be precise our lunch spot doubtlessly would be decided by our friend. ^.~

A fairly recent addition to Subang Jaya SS15’s host of eateries, my friend recommended  Stacks that he tried not long ago. With a principle of “Affordable, Fulfilling and Innovative”, one can expect a good range of Japanese fusion food with very affordable price tag which nothing more than RM20.

The interior of Stacks was simple and straight forward, provided a comfy and pleasant dining environment to the diners.

The menu featured a list of essential Japanese fares (pork-free) included Sushi (priced at RM1.90 & RM2.90), appetizers (Chuka Kurage, Edamame, Tamago Mentaiyaki, etc), Salad (Sashimi Salad, Tofu Wakame Salad, etc), Sashimi (priced from RM11.90 to RM18.90), Maki, Temaki, Doburi (Unatama Don, Oyako Don, Tendon, Chicken Curry Rice, etc), Menmono (Shoyu Ramen, Curry Udon, Kitsune Udon, etc), Agemono (Ebi Tempura, Takoyaki, Chicken Gyoza, etc), Yakimono (Saba Teriyaki, Salmon Mentayaki, Shishamo, etc) and Wanmono (Chawanmushi, Asari Soup, etc).

Genmaicha (Hot – RM2.00/refillable)

Stacks Authentic Drip Coffee (RM5.90)

Salmon Sushi (RM2.90), Inari Tuna Mayo (RM2.90), White Tuna Sushi (RM2.90), Inari Shushi (RM1.90) & Gunakan Lidako (RM1.90)

For the priced charged, we had no complaint about the quality of the Sushi that we ordered. ^_^

We thought Stacks is a Kaitenzushi (conveyor belt sushi, 回転寿司) as we saw the conveyor belt that winds through the restaurant. However it didn’t functioning throughout our lunch and after inquiry, the staff told us that it was from previous tenant and all their food is prepared upon order.

Asama Sashimi (RM18.90)

Stacks stays true to their principle of “affordable” Japanese food for everyone, without compromising not only on the quality but the quantity/portion too. For a price less than RM20, we got 3 types of Shashimi – Salmon, White Tuna, Octopus (3 pieces each), with adequate thickness and satisfying level of freshness.

Stacks Mentai Shirizu (RM13.90)

A Mentai themed sushi platter, decorated with a flower shaped Salmon Sashimi.

Stacks Omu Garlic Rice with Karaage (RM16.90)

One of their signature dishes and it was indeed noteworthy. The garlic fried rice was perfectly executed, fluffy and fragrant with every grains separated and no lumps detected. The Karaage on the other hand was rather mediocre though.

In conjunction to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan, Stacks has curated some special  dishes which only available for limited period.

Stacks Spicy Unagi Roll (RM15.90)

The Maki roll consisted of grilled Unagi, topped with sliced cucumber, fried shredded crab filament stick, covered with Tobiko and drizzled with spicy mayo. I like the textural differences this Maki roll has to offer – soft rice, crunchy cucumber and crispy fried shredded crab filament stick. The creamy spicy sauce worked well to amped up the overall flavour.

Sarang Burung Stacks (RM8.90)

Crumbed hard boiled egg topped with creamy chopped crab filament stick. This most probably my least favourite item of that day due to its bland tasting flavour.

Stacks Yaki Udon (RM14.90)

A decent Japanese noodle dish packed with sweet, savoury and umami flavour.

Verdict: Food here certainly exceed expectations for the price paid. If you’re looking for decent Japanese meal without burning a hole in your pocket, Stacks definitely your ideal option! I wish they can open an outlet nearer to me…… (^.^)/
