Beef Wat Dan Hor & Sin Chew Chicken Rice @ Restoran New Pom Pom, Taman Universiti, P.J

Beef Wat Dan Hor (RM13.00)

This was the purpose I visited Restoran New Pom Pom but seem like there’s another noteworthy vendor in this Kopitiam…… Anyway, let’s go back to the food that enticed me to this initial visit.

Apart from the Beef Wat Dan Hor, this Simon Chef offers a couple of interesting dishes such as Lamb Fried Kuey Teow, Hock Chew Mee Suah and Drunken Prawns.

The noodle (Hor Fun) was beautifully fried, well charred with satisfying smokey flavour. The gravy and the beef slices on the other hand weren’t as likeable. The flavour of the thick eggy gravy was a little subdued and the beef was rather chewy. I’ve had a better tasting Beef Wat Dan Hor elsewhere.

We saw peoples were queuing for takeaway in front of this chicken rice stall, this aroused our curiosity and decided to place an order for it. The queue was remained throughout our lunch.

Chicken Drumstick + Siew Yoke Rice (RM11.00)

The rice was aromatic but the texture missed the mark, it was rather dry (or undercooked?) I heard that the Char Siew was good but it sold out when I placed order so we settled with chicken + Siew Yoke instead. We certainly got off on the right foot with the order as the roasted meat was respectably executed with crunchy skin and well marinated meat. The roasted chicken was decent, tender and succulent.

Oh ya, one thing I need to highlight is the complimentary soup was good and it was laden with plenty of ingredients.

Verdict: Both food that we tried were just average at best, so don’t put too high expectation like me, this Kopitiam still a viable lunch option if you find yourself at this area.

  • I totally get your excitement about the Beef Wat Dan Hor, it sounded so promising! But it’s a bummer that the gravy and beef didn’t live up to expectations. I guess we’ve all had those moments when we’ve tasted better versions of our favorite dishes elsewhere.

  • And oh boy, that chicken rice stall! The long queue definitely piqued my curiosity too. It’s a shame the Char Siew sold out, but hey, chicken + Siew Yoke sounds like a tasty alternative! The roasted meat with its crunchy skin and well-marinated meat must have been a delightful surprise. And let’s not forget that complimentary soup loaded with ingredients!

Overall, it seems like the food at Restoran New Pom Pom was just average. Not mind-blowing, but still a decent lunch option if you happen to be in the area.

  • I used to stay at SS3 but never been to this particular place!

  • Ah, beef wat tan hor where the beef was not velveted properly (as if I’m a chef…lol) will be on the chewier side. Most places that do sang har mee tend get their beef right. ^_~
