Ah Yap Chicken Rice @ Taman Kepong, Kepong

It’s a no brainer that Sam will choose chicken rice over Vietnamese food when she was given the above mentioned lunch options that afternoon. She’s most probably one of the biggest chicken rice fans that I know. (‘_’)

We have been passing by this place numerous times but unaware the existence of Ah Yap Chicken Rice. This zinc roofed food stall is located near the Kepong railway station, under a flyover and with the facade not facing the main road. Due to its rather secluded location, we never notice this place although it has been operating for at least 6 years (from the Google reviews that I read).

Like most of the Hainanese chicken rice eateries, Ah Yap Chicken Rice offers poached chicken and offal served with rice or flat rice noodles aka Hor Fun, together with side dishes such as blanched bean sprout, braised items (eggs, chicken feet and bean curd) and meat balls soup.

Ah Yap Chicken Rice only provides Kampung Chicken (free range chicken) and it was satisfactorily tender and succulent. I’m happy to see that the skin of the chook wasn’t too fat as well.

Braised eggs were mediocre, I would have hope they were braised longer to be flavoured further.

Hor Fun was thinner type and this bowl of noodles certainly well worth slurping up. Their rice (I think my rice photo missing T_T) also good on its own, very delightfully flavoured.

Both chili sauce and ginger sauce were pungent and lent a punchy kick to the dishes.

Total bill came to RM51.50 – Half bird, 2 plates of rice, 1 bowl of Hor Fun, 2 braised eggs and 5 pork balls. Food was very decent by many standards and certainly has a place among some of the better Hainanese Chicken Rice I’ve eaten. Check out THIS too which is within the vicinity as well.

  • Uiks! Kris also blogged about chicken rice 😀 I am also a chicken rice fan although now I will only eat the chicken. It is always poached chicken for me. Looks like this Ah Yap Chicken Rice got the thumbs up from you.

  • PH, really? I have yet read her new post. 😛
If I have it for weekdays lunch, I always skip rice or less rice, I normally only have carbo on weekend.

  • What a coincidence….you’ve got a chicken rice post too! 😉 The hor fun here is just to compliment the poached chicken I reckon…don’t quite have the looks of those kai si hor fun. The chicken looks good and I’ll like the ginger sauce here since I seen green bits in them…blended with spring onions and yin sai, I think. P/S: Since you can make it to San Peng for the prawn mee, try to get to Guang Ji Ho Fun if you can for excellent kai si hor fun, poached chicken & everything else…lol.

    • Kris, I saw the crowd at Guang Ji when I was there and thought it was the San Peng Prawn Mee that hubby wanted me to try. My family not big fan of Kai Si Hor Fun but since your recommendation on thier poached chicken, I’ll bring Sam (also myself :P) here to try out.

  • That cili sauce looks best.
