Luck Luck Hainanese Chicken Rice 恒运海南鸡饭 @ Kepong

The founder of Luck Luck Hainanese Chicken Rice is said to be acquired his skill from another chicken rice shop hence I could taste the similarity in their food.

The fuss-free and comfy dining area. The restaurant is located near two primary schools (SJK (C) Kepong 1 & Kepong 2), so it’s advisable not to visit during school run period as the traffic can be quite horrendous at this area.

Two types of dipping sauce to go with the chicken rice – the piquant chilli sauce with a slight tangy kick and the ginger sauce.

The complimentary looked deceptively plain but packed of flavours.

The menu boasts a decent selection of poached chicken, roasted chicken, barbequed pork (Char Siew), roasted pork (Siew Yoke), and side dishes like pork balls, bean sprouts, as well as some chicken innard (gizzard and liver).

White Rice & Oil Rice (Small – RM1.50)

The oil rice was fluffy and fragrant, richly infused with chicken broth, ginger, lemongrass and Pandan leaves.

Village Chicken – Lower Quarter (RM28.00)

At Luck Luck, they only serve village chicken aka “Choy Yun Kai” which had a firmer meat but it was still satisfactorily tender. The thin and silky smooth skin was another element that I enjoyed and appreciated. The soy sauce and oil dressing was surprisingly came with a subtle sweet note which I have never encountered before. It wasn’t my preferential taste for poached chicken dressing but don’t take my word for it, drop by if you have chance to try it yourself.

Char Siew (100g – RM10.00)

The Char Siew was soft with an adequate layer of caramelized skin and slightly charred edges. It wasn’t overly sweet with the fair dose of sweetness came from the thick sticky Char Siew sauce that judiciously drizzled over the cut pieces.

Siew Yoke (100g – RM11.00)

The Siew Yoke on the other hand wasn’t as good as we would have hope. I thought the meat could do with a stronger marinade and the crucial element of crunchy skin was missing too. It certainly not something I would want to order again. (´・ω・`)

Bean Sprout (Small – RM2.00)

Verdict: Together with THIS and THIS, Luck Luck is another chicken rice shop that well worth checking out in Kepong area.

  • When I tried Street Hainan Chicken Rice in a neighbouring taman, I thought their choy yin kai was the best meat option followed by char siew…and that their siew yuk needs work (and you came to a similar conclusion too). So, if the owner of this shop learned from Street Hainan, you know he didn’t learn (to make siew yuk) from the best…lol.

  • Kris, like what you said, both Luck Luck and Street Hainan Chicken Rice’s Siew Yoke was a let down.
