Red Inn Hot Pot 红城客锅 @ Bandar Menjalara, Kepong

Joined the heavily populated area of Bandar Menjalara, Red Inn Hot Pot originated from Ipoh is the latest addition to the famous Kepong’s “hotpot town”.

Nestled in one of the new commercial residential building at Bandar Menjalara, Red Inn Hot Pot interior is inspired by 1970’s old Shanghai. The big mural of Shanghai’s street view, vintage Chinese advertisement posters adorning the brick window frames, neon lights as well as oldies played at the background, the setting gracefully evokes the olden Chinese vibe.

Our visit was on a weeknight and we were welcomed graciously by the staff when we arrived. One of the amiable staffs was so nice to show me their private room when I asked about the availability of the restaurant’s private room. Located on second floor, the above photo is the only private room which is equipped with karaoke system, ideal for small gathering or private function.

The large menu offers wide variety of familiar hotpot ingredients, ranging from sliced meat, offals, seafood, assorted of homemade meat balls, vegetables, mushrooms, as well as small selection of fried snacks. Recommended cooking time for each ingredient is clearly stated in the menu to ensure the diners can enjoy the food at its best.

Tea Pot (RM15.00)

There are 3 choices for the pot – Signature Four Season (RM80.00), Twin Soup (RM50.00) and Single Soup (RM30.00), which are 4 types of soup in a pot, 2 types of soup and one soup, respectively.

We opted for their Signature Sake Broth, Fresh Lala Soup, Pork Bone Soup and Garlic Spicy Soup. Other soup bases included Healthy Tomato Soup and Famous Green Pepper Soup.

There were generous amount of plump clams in our Fresh Lala Soup and it got much praised from us that evening. The sweetness of the clams was apparent in the broth, with faint hint of herbal note. (☆ω☆*)

Signature Sake Broth ~ A rather mild tasting broth infused with gentle “alcohol” and herbal flavour.

Pork Bone Soup ~ Not the thick milky pork bone soup that we accustomed to but more to the kind of soup for pork noodles, clear but nicely infused with porky essence.

Garlic Spicy Soup ~ Surprisingly they don’t offer the popular numbing spicy Mala soup base but this gentle and less oily version.

Barbie Doll Pork Belly (RM69.00)

Fancily presented, the thinly sliced pork belly were deftly on the doll as her “dress”. (ˆ▽ˆ❁)

Pork belly slices are one of the essential orders for any hotpot meal, just cook in the hot broth for merely 10-20 seconds to enjoy its best texture.

Lamb Loin (RM49.00)

The lamb slices were disappointed because they were chewy due to the wrong cutting (cut with the grain). We did informed the staff regarding our gripe too. (ñ_ñ)

Pork Meatball (RM19.00)

Homemade meat balls scored well in terms of flavours and texture.

Hong Kong Bean Curd Sheet (RM9.00)

Best ingredients to absorb the flavour of the broth, a must order!

Quail Eggs (RM9.00)

Napa Cabbage (RM9.00) & White Shimeji Mushroom (RM9.00)

Hong Kong Choy Sum (RM9.00)

Ramen (RM9.00)

For mom who need carbo for her “complete meal”. (^○^)

Mix and match your dipping sauce at their sauce counter with an array of sauces and condiments. This is their signature dipping sauce prepared by the staff.

Service was friendly and attentive. I like how the staff use the fan to avoid the soup splattering during soup refill.

♥Verdict: Comfortable environment and friendly service, customer service certainly plays an important role when comes to the overall dining experience (eg: Haidilao). Price could be slightly steep especially when their competitors in the same vicinity offer a more wallet friendly hotpot/steamboat meal, but Red Inn commensurate with the quality of food and service. Not really a place I can afford to visit regularly but it’s definitely worth visit again, perhaps for some special occasions.

  • From the decor to the fabric cushioned chairs, it’s obvious this is a more “atas” hotpot. That’s why they have the time to “dress up” their pork belly…lol. When they refill your fresh lala soup, does it still come with more lala? Kekeke! ;D Their signature dipping sauce looks very refreshing and zesty.

    • Kris, I think those Chinese style hotpot restaurants are always more “atas” if compared with our local steamboat restaurants which offers set ingredients. The Barbie pork belly definitely a gimmick to attract people, especially in social medias. You’re right, the dipping sauce is zesty but I prefer mine with Foo Yu and sesame sauce, a more nutty sauce.

  • Very interesting! I am quite fascinated with the Barbie Doll Pork Belly. They arranged the pork slices so beautifully and the poor Barbie will be naked at the end. LOL! Hotpot seems to be the in thing and I think there are 2 such restaurants at Damansara Uptown, though I have not visited. There is also a small mala hotpot restaurant at the basement of The Starling.
