Yen Can Cook: One Pot Chuncheong Dak Galbi

After Japchae and Budae Jjigae, my next Korean food recipe is this one pot Chuncheong Dak Galbi or Spicy Stir Fried Chicken. It is a popular Korean dish made by stir-frying marinated diced chicken in a gochujang-based sauce with sweet potatoes, cabbage, perilla leaves, scallions, tteok (rice cake), and other ingredients. My first Dak Galbi experience was at Uncle Jang a few years back and has became an avid fan since then.

Adapted from One Pot Meals, recipe book by Squall Chin, this recipe is unbelievably easy yet doesn’t compromise on flavours.

Ingredients (Serve: 3-4)

900g -1kg boneless chicken leg, cut into bite size

200g cabbage, cut into pieces

1-2 sweet potatoes, cut into strips

1 cup tteok (Korean rice cake),

3-4 stalks spring onion, cut into 2inch length

1 slice cheddar cheese

Cooking oil


3 tablespoons Gochujang (Korean red chili paste)

3 tablespoons chili powder

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons soy sauce

4 tablespoons cooking wine

1 teaspoon salt

3 teaspoons sesame oil

1 teaspoon minced ginger

1.5 tablespoons minced garlic

4 tablespoons water


Step 1: Marinate the chicken pieces with marinade for at least 2 hours

Step 2: Heat oil in a pot/deep pan, put in the chicken(Step 1), followed by cabbage, sweet potato strips and rice cakes. Let it cooked for 3-5 minutes then toss to mix well.

Step 3: Stir fry for 5 minutes, add in spring onion and some water and cover the lid and let them cooked through. Stir occasionally to avoid burn on the bottom.

Step 4: Place the cheese on top and serve.
