Marco Polo Chinese Cuisine @ Jalan Raja Chulan, K.L

For good Chinese cuisine, there is always a tendency to flock back to the familiar eateries that withstood the test of times. Eateries that have been standing for more than 40 years would have something special about that. One of the familiar element could be the old school Chinese restaurant setting.

However, my visit to one of such eateries that have been here since 40 years ago does not have such elements. Marco Polo has been been operating since January 1980 and the ambiance does not even suggest that. It exudes a modern and comfortable ambiance while guaranteeing you delicious good old fashion Chinese menu.

Nevertheless, the recent pandemic situation has affected the F&B scene financially as well as on operation side and it includes Marco Polo where the main restaurant not been operating since the announcement of MCO till only last month (June 2020).

With it’s reopening, it has been going strong with the office crowd and weekend family crowd, particularly with the introduction of package set aimed to boost your immunity.

Located strategically in Wisma Lim Foo Yong, Kuala Lumpur city centre, the dining area of Marco Polo Chinese Cuisine certainly had the feel of spaciousness with a lot of room between tables. The restaurant boasts a simple yet elegant interior with flowery motif carpeted floor, high ceiling graced with modern chandeliers and round table with pristine table cloth. It’s a very comfortable atmosphere partnered with clean and pleasant setting. Private rooms are available in addition to the spacious main dining area.

We were here for lunch on Sunday and the restaurant was almost fully occupied with diners enjoying their Dim Sum which is available everyday from 11.00am to 2.30pm. Service was attentive despite the restaurant being very busy.

Deep Fried Prawns in Salted Egg 黄金葱爆虾球

Golden crispy battered prawns with unctuous coating of salted egg yolk sauce sit on bed of stir fried onion. This was decadent and lip-smacking yum.

Sweet and Sour Pork 波萝咕噜肉

Beautiful in hues of orangey redness, crispy meat pieces were coated in the classic sweet and sour sauce along with pieces of pineapple, tomato, bell pepper and cucumber. A dish that is bound to be a favorite to diners of all ages.

Tofu with Bean Sheet and Vegetables 豆筋豆腐时蔬

Bean curd and bean sheet (bean gluten) were nicely braised in a delicate brown sauce, paired with some blanched greens, the dish is light and easy to enjoy.

Browsed thru the large ala-carte menu, we couldn’t resist and ordered a couple of their signature dishes.

Signature BBQ Sampler 烧腊拼盘 (RM88.00)

The platter comprised Cha Siu (BBQ pork), Siu Yoke (roasted pork) and roasted duck.

Nicely cut chunks of roasted pork with golden and crunchy crackly skin, sheathing meat with adequate fat-to-lean-meat ratio. The texture and flavour were definitely hit the spot and made every calories consumption worth it.

The roasted duck has such a gorgeous and glistening lacquered on the skin. The crispy skin is wondrously addictive while the meat is deliciously succulent, each bite into the piece of duck yields great satisfaction.

Gleaming in beautiful mahogany colour, the Cha Siu was enrobed with sticky sweet sauce and the edges with just the right degree of char imparted a pleasant smoky flavour to the meat.

The platter was served with special house made belacan and plum sauce.

Signature Cantonese Style Hor Fun 招牌滑蛋河 (RM20.00/pax – min 2 pax)

Silky and soothing flavours of eggy gravy blanketing slippery soft rice noodles with prawn, scallop, giant clam, Cha Siu and veggies.

Boiled Chinese Pear with Fresh Ginseng 鲜人参炖雪梨 (RM10.00)

It’s light and wonderfully soothing after all the dishes we had.

Cream of Almond 生磨杏仁露 (RM10.00)

House made puree of Chinese and American almond.

Prepacked lunch boxes are available at Marco To Go for takeaway.
