Taifeng Taiwanese Hotpot @ Dataran C180, Cheras
Will you travel far for food?
My answer will be ‘YES’ if it is for great food with excellent service. As a steambaot fanatic, I have my eye on a certain Taiwanese hotpot that was raved by many foodies. Since we were on a staycation right smack in the city center last month (hotel review will be upped later), I won’t missed a chance to have Taifeng Taiwanese Hotpot as my dinner venue.
Mind you, it will be over an hour drive if I came direct from Kepong. Although the address given is at Cheras but the location is quite close to Balakong area that is aptly named Cheras Perdana (Any Cheras resident can enlighten me?)
After approximately 40 minutes drive from city centre, we arrived Dataran C180, a commercial area filled with numerous eateries and cafe especially steamboat and hotpot restaurants.
There was a few groups in the waiting list when we reached TaiFeng, we joined the queue and got our table after another half an hour. (which became a very late dinner)
We were ushered to our table and I was immediately struck by the interior. Dimly lit, exposed red bricks walls, dangling light bulbs and soft Mandarin oldies played at the background, definitely a setting that out of my expectation for a hotpot/steamboat restaurant!
The “wishing trees” placed in the restaurant and patrons can doodle anything on the free wooden board provided.
Unique plant in the jar hanging sparingly on the wall.
Tea in assorted flavors are on sale too.
Sauces counter – You may mix your prefer concoction or the server will serve you their signature dipping sauce.
Left: Taifeng’s signature dipping sauce comprises deep fried dried shrimps, chili sauce with dried shrimp & PEANUT BUTTER & Right: Chili sauce
Their signature dipping sauce is one of the best I’ve ever had, it was superb, seriously! Creamy, spicy and aromatic, went well with all the ingredients which manage to elevate the overall flavors. Can all the steamboat restaurants make this available in your outlet? ^__*
Chinese Tea (RM 2.00 / pax – refillable)
Steamboat set (RM 20.90 / pax)
We had set for 2 pax as shown in the photo. Creatively served in a 3-tier bamboo basket consists of typical steamboat ingredients such as assorted meat balls, bean curd sheet, prawns, tofu, vegetables and udon.
Pickle Cabbage & Pork Soup Base (RM 25.00/pot)
There are 4 soup bases available, Tomato (RM 20.00), Lemongrass & Wine (RM 20.00), Tomato & Milk (RM 20.00) and Pickle Cabbage & Pork (RM 20.00). Before the ingredients were added, the server scooped a bowl for each of us to try the flavor, which my 1st time experienced this.
Before I start talking about the food, their service deserved a special mention. We were treat like a VIP here without paying any premium charges. The staff will notify you about everything they are about to do. For example, they will ask for permission before helping to to add in any ingredients and our tea pot was constantly refilled throughout the session. The staffs were extremely polite and have an innate ability to remain attentive yet unobtrusive.
Price is slightly on the higher side for the soup base but rest assured, the quality of the soup will be there. Came with abundance of pickled cabbage and pork belly slices, the broth had a pleasant sourness which can really whet your appetite.
Taifeng Signature Cheese Pork Balls (RM 8.90)
Beware of the pipping hot oozing goodness when savor this ^__*
Pork Slices (RM 13.00)
Our vegetable was sliced and some fried garlic was added into the egg at the end of our session (under our permission :P) which going to be added into the broth for a more aromatic soup.
Each steamboat set is entitled a scoop of Haagen Dazs ice-cream.
Verdict: I was largely contented with my meal at Taifeng, the top notch service certainly contribute some winning points for the restaurant. Great great news for steamboat lovers at Kepong area (me, is me!!), Taifeng 2nd branch is opened a few days ago at Plaza Manjalara. So I can skip the one hour plus journey and savour this which officially become my favourite hotpot now! See you there!
