Be Real @ Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong
When I saw photos of Be Real shared by my friend in social media, I couldn’t believe this enticing looking cafe is opened in my neighbourhood, Kepong. At an unlikely location, in one of the old commercial area right beside the morning market.
If you haven’t already know, Kepong is one of the biggest new villages formed during the Malayan Emergency. Many people think Kepong is and old/out-dated town, but it has seen so much progress and transformation with modern and contemporary development taking place over the years (eg. the latest Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya MRT Line). Besides the old school restaurants and kopitiam, there are more and more interesting and modern cafes and eateries sprouting up within the territory. Be Real is one of them.
Occupied the first floor of the shoplot, my first impression of the cafe’s interior with cozy ambiance filled with lots of natural lights was very welcoming and pleasant at sight. Wooden tone is used with a mixture of bold colours of black, white and gray with extra touches of greenery which I appreciated. Photography enthusiasts, this place would be a delight to you with plenty of natural lighting, for your perfect food or OOTD shots.
List of their suppliers and producers which is being printed in their menu. Be Real cultures and ferments their condiments such as miso, red yeast paste, enzymes, Lacto garlics, budu, kefir and kombucha. To offer an authentic ORGANIC dining experience to the patrons, all ingredients used are sourced directly from sustainable farms and fisheries which are pesticide free, antibiotic free, beta agonist free, chemical free and no drug residue.
Hojicha (RM15.00)
Americano (RM8.00)
The beverage menu comprised the usual drinks of coffees, non-coffees, teas as well as their special handcrafted drinks such as as Fruity Kefir Water (RM8.00), Minty Pineapple Enzyme Mocktail (RM15.00), Lacto Tomato Honey Mocktail (RM15.00).
The food menu was peerlessly compact with rather limited choices for each type of dishes (eg. 2 types of salads, 3 types of burgers, etc). The list had a bit of everything from burgers (beef, chicken & pork), salads, big breakfast, soups, noodles (Siam Laksa, Kerabu Mihoen), moussaka, pork stew, bread, cakes and cookies.
Terra Salad in Sweet Cherry Tomato Vinegrette (RM15.90)
I adored the sweetness and crispiness of those fresh biodynamic vegetables, together with sourdough croutons, toasted sesame seeds, sous vide Kampong egg and rounded out with sweet cherry tomato vinegrette. It was a hearty combination of textures and flavours that I don’t mind have it regularly.
Shaksouka (RM20.90)
It was a meatless version of baked egg in chunky spiced tomato capsicum sauce, garnished with spring onion, coriander, ricotta cheese. The flavours are very inviting with a lovely balance of tangy, sweet and savory. The sourdough were ideal for scooping up the lovely baked egg sauce.
Black Pepper Pork with Sourdough Bread (RM15.90)
This was Sri Lankan black pepper pork as per stated in the menu but I only managed to get “Sri Lankan Black Pepper Pork Curry” when I tried to Google for it. But anyway, this dish did not impress us much. It had good dose of spices yet not overwhelming but the texture of the pork belly was a bit dry. Served with appetizing peashoots salad and pineapple salsa.
Bacon (RM5.00/pcs) & Satay Pork Sausage (RM6.00/pcs)
We added on their house made bacon which is cured for 14 days, made by using Long Farm pork belly, organic raw cane sugar, celtic sea salt and shiokoji. Definitely not cheap and we couldn’t taste the different this and those commercially produced bacon 😛 But of course, the former is much more heathier.
The sausage is made from Sanbanto pork, natural hog casing, shiokoji, herbs and spices. Adequately seasoned and succulent, good stuff!
♥Verdict: Visually, Be Real hit all the right notes, thanks to the spacious and sun drenched interior. Hits and misses on the food, but I’m not sure if I’m going to revisit. Oh ya, the sourdough was not bad which I think worth trying.

I like how cozy the place is with plenty of sunlight.
The Shaksouka looks really inviting. 😀 Would prefer to eat this with rice instead.
Tekkaus, since I don’t like my rice too wet and drenched in sauces, so I think I won’t eat Shaksouka with rice. LOL
Love the natural light in the space.
KY, it’s nearby the place you had chicken rice @ Taman Maluri, Kepong. 🙂
