Beef Noodles & Lala Meehoon @ Lai Foong Restaurant, Jln Tun HS Lee, KL

choiyen.com most probably the only food blog that never blog about this famous beef noodles stall housed in the Lai Foong Restaurant (coffee shop), which is located just across the entrance of Petaling Street at the intersection of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock and Jalan Tun HS Lee. But better late than never, I finally made my maiden visit a few weeks ago.

Commonly known as Lai Foong Beef Noodles, it is one of the vendors inside this old school coffee shop aka kopitiam and another quite popular food here is the Lala Meehoon, which is vermicelli in clam soup.

Super packed on Saturday afternoon. The environment was a bit warm and stuffy due to the scorching weather, although there were ceiling fans and wall fans. I could feel the tickling of sweat in me after walking from the Pasar Seni MRT station, yes it’s a impromptu decision to take MRT from our place to downtown KL.

Very clear menu being displayed at the stall that featured types of noodles available and combination of beef part to go with the noodles. Only soup version is served here. Apart from the usual brisket, tendon, tripe and honeycomb tripe, they also offer special or would I say some exotic parts like tongue, intestine, spleen, torpedo (⊙▂⊙) and testicle (⊙▂⊙ x 2)!!

Sliced Beef + Beef Balls (Regular – RM14.00)

Sam had the simplest sliced beef + beef balls combination, which is most acceptable by many and she requested for Hor Fun (flat rice noodles).

The broth wasn’t as murky as I’ve expected, appeared in light brownish hue with sprinkles of chopped spring onions and fried shallots. The unmistakable taste of beef was front and centre at first sip, followed by hint of soy sauce. The fried shallot + oil (I assumed) imparted an extra aroma to the broth as well. There were chopped Ham Choy (pickled mustard greens) in the soup too but they were rather bland in taste.

The sliced beef was adequately tender which I can see that they were not thoroughly cooked. Beef balls were bouncy and tasted average decent.

Signature Mixed Beef (Regular – RM14.00)

There were brisket, tendon, sliced beef, beef balls and tripe in my bowl of mixed beef Lai Fun (aka Laksa noodles, made from rice and tapioca flour, which usually pair with Asam Laksa). The beef parts were well cleaned and prepared, showcased their best texture. Brisket, tendon, sliced beef and tripe were soft while the tendon was gelatinous with a good bite.

We also tried another notable food at Lai Foong which is the Lala Meehoon.

Lala Meehoon (RM14.00)

The sweet inducing soup was laden with shredded ginger, bird eye chilies and spring onions. The broth was flavourful and delivered a punch and spicy sensation to the taste bud. However, the clams were rather smallish/less fleshy.

Verdict: The beef noodles has been built up a stellar reputation for years and and it is indeed famous for a reason – they know their food well and prove themselves noteworthy.

The Lala Meehoon is well worthy checking out too. They have another outlet at Jalan Sultan, if you’re seel for a more comfortable dining experience (air-conditioned and spacious).

  • Hehey, choiyen.com is not the only blog lah that has not blogged about this famous beef noodle…eatwhateatwhere also has not…kekeke! 😉 Petaling Street is not a place my husband is willing to go for traffic & parking reasons. I think I might have eaten their beef noodles a long time ago. The lala noodles is what I’m interested to try though….the soup looks enticing but the lala meat looks shrivelled up (I had lala noodles in a shop in my neighbourhood just last week and the lala looked like that too). >.<

    • Kris, you can choose to take public transport to reach this area (alight at Pasar Seni Station). Lala that shrivelled up like that really cannot provide satisfactory hor….. >_<

  • This must be the beef noodle stall that my partner was telling me about because he mentioned Petaling Street. I have not been to Petaling Street for a very long time. I used to go there during my student days to watch movies at Rex cinema. I believe the cinema is not there anymore. I would love to try the famous beef noodles but not convenient to go there.

    • PH, like what I told Kris, take public transport would be an ideal option. There is another queuing beef noodles (Sin Kiew Yee Shin Kee Beef Noodles) right opposite Lai Foong, so that might be the one your hubby told you too.
