Der Backmeister @ Bangsar

Der Backmeister, known as the only Halal German restaurant cum bakery in town, currently with three outlets at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail (TTDI), Bangsar and Ampang.

Away from the bustling Telawi terrain, Der Backmeister nestles in this gorgeous building – Bunglow 37, in a quiet neighboorhood at Jalan Abdullah. Surrounded by lovely drapery greens, shrubs and plants with blooming flowers, you’ll surely be captivated by the beautiful facade of the restaurant.

Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by this elegant Victorian style setting which is the perfect backdrop for the much needed update across socials.

Further in was the spacious dining area as well as counters for some delightful looking baked goods.

Took the stairs up to the second floor, there was another seating area which seem to be closed on that day.

Further into the second section lies another seating area filled with lots of natural light beaming through.

I was attracted by their terrace instantly when I saw the photos in the articles that I read and requested to be seated here when I made my reservation. Inspired by the concept of a greenhouse (I assumed, but this space used to be an open space without the glass windows), the terrace was adorned with huge glass windows with a view of lush greenery outside. Potted plants were placed around the dining area and the life that the plants breathe into the place is what makes the terrace so captivating. I really adore the coziness and laid back vibe brought by this leafy space with sunshine.

From indoor or the semi al-fresco dining setting, the restaurant has three different seating areas with distinct ambience that suit whatever mood you’re in.

The menu wasn’t really compact with a list of German delights which focus heavily on bread, sausages and meat, with small selection of pastas, soups and sandwiches.

Germano Black Coffee (RM10.00)

Bavarian Sausage (RM28.00)

There is no Germany without sausages.

One can find numerous varieties of sausage in Germany and they are prepared in many different ways and include a range of ingredients and unique spice blends.

We ordered the Bavarian white sausage – Weisswurst, served to the table in a big bowl together with with the cooking water. Also came in a set were a huge Brezel and the sweet mustard dipping.

Actually it should be eaten without the skin but we were not aware of that. (-‸ლ) Despite the pale appearance, the sausages actually quite well flavoured from the seasoning and herbs. It also had a rather toothsome firm texture.

The huge Brezel (German term for pretzel) had a crisp, glossy outer crust, lightly salted, with a chewy interior.

Sunny Meatloaf (RM23.00)

Served with sunny side up, several buttered sliced breads (a few varieties), coleslaw and  mustard dipping, the meatloaf (Leberkäse) tasted exactly like our canned luncheon meat! Savoury and delectable!

The Big Backmeister (RM48.00)

I have a soft spot for cold cut and cheeses, so this platter obviously the pull factor that allured me to visit Der Backmeister.

Assorted cold cut, salami, cheeses, gherkin, sliced cucumber, tomatoes, green apples,  halved hard boiled egg as well as mustard dipping. The set also came with egg of your choice – scrambled or sunny side up.

Bread also an important part of German cuisine and they are usually in form of loaf (Brot) or a small, usually crusty roll (Brötchen). Our lovely bread basket was filled with assorted bread and buns with different textures and flavours, served with strawberry jam and butter. I love them all, I would say!

Apple Strudel (RM15.00)

Austria’s national desserts, Germany has also adopted it into its local cuisine. The version here was a big serving of buttery pastry filled with sliced apples cooked with sugar and cinnamon. The spiced apple filling had good dose of sweetness and acidity but the pastry skin could be more flaky.

Long time no show face in my blog, here’s a picture of me with the Instagrammable corner with a British pillar box. (〃▽〃)

Verdict: It’s definitely a pleasant dining experience at Der Backmeister, in terms of food and environment. I’ll come back again for sure!

  • I must say that the breads and pastries are very tempting especially the Apple Strudel! Yes, I still have a soft spot for carbohydrates although I don’t have crazy cravings anymore. But still, when I see it, the memories come back LOL! Since they have a branch at TTDI, I will find my way there one day. You look very lovely and I like your top and skirt!

    • PH, perhaps you can skip the apple strudel as it wasn’t the better one I’ve tried.
Hope you can make a visit soon and enjoy your meal at their TTDI branch.
      TQ for the compliment. 🙂

  • Yeah, the meatloaf does indeed look like our luncheon meat…I wouldn’t have visualised that coz my idea of a meatloaf is quite different from what I see here. I’ve never eaten sausages where you’re not supposed to eat the skin! >.< How to do that lah? Peel off the skin with your hands? If you were not supposed to eat the skin, why did they serve it with the skin on then! @_@

    • Kris, I was surprised when I saw the meatloaf too, hehe 😛
Calm down calm down….haha! You can Google on how to enjoy the Bavarian white sausage and you’ll understand LOL
